JFS Staff Spotlight: Who’s Who Behind the Front Desk
When you call or email the JFS office, who are the dedicated individuals ensuring your needs are met? Allow us to introduce you to Julie Dalli, Administrative Support Specialist, and Lori Trapani, Client Services Specialist. They are the heartbeat of our agency, expertly managing the daily operations of the front office.
Lori Trapani
With three years of service at JFS, I am primarily responsible for coordinating with insurance companies to ensure proper coverage and billing for therapy sessions, as well as managing all related administrative tasks. Additionally, I assist new clients by facilitating the paperwork process required before therapy can begin. Outside of work, I cherish spending time with my 2 ½-year-old granddaughter. I also enjoy playing mah-jongg, tennis, and pickleball.

As the Administrative Support Specialist for Jewish Family Services for the past four years, I find deep satisfaction in knowing that my work supports our clients, donors, and staff. Every task I handle, from the smallest detail to the most complex challenge, is meaningful because it contributes to the smooth operation of our agency. I’m passionate about autumn—everything from the crisp air and vibrant foliage to the comforting warmth of pumpkin spice lattes brings me joy.

Music and Munchies
On Sunday, August 18th 41 attendees, including volunteers, staff, survivors and assorted family and friends, came together at JFS’ Music and Munchies. We would like to thank Senior Engagement staff Tracee and Ruth for a wonderful job planning the event! The décor was lovely, and the food, catered by Izzy’s Catering, was plentiful and delicious. The musical entertainer, Giovanni Grimaudo, was very engaging according to the many complements from attendees. Sheryl Gerrard, Senior Engagement Manager, shared, “As always, my favorite part was observing reunions among old friends and creating connections among new ones.”

Caregiver Speaker Series
Join us in welcoming speaker Mattie Ablitz, local occupational therapist (OT). Mattie will take us on a virtual walk of a home to: assess safety hazards, identify potential modifications, and plan for aging-in-place needs. Many of us help older, sick, or disabled family members and friends every day. We know we are helping, but we don't think of ourselves as caregivers. Caregiving can be stressful. That’s where supportive information can be helpful. No cost to attend. Thursday, 9/19, 3-4:30pm via Zoom. To register or for more information visit bit.ly/CaregiverSpeakerSept2024. (I will insert hyperlink that is clickable in newsletter.)

Caregiver Thrive Learn Connect (TLC)
Join the Senior Engagement team, with master-level TLC facilitator training, for a virtual 6-week workshop series for those caring for a loved one with dementia or a chronic health condition. Participants will build skills and tools to manage stress, depression, frustration, self-care and isolation by developing an individual action plan each week. There is no cost to attend and program includes practical tools with access to online resources and a participant packet. Results of this program showed caregivers reported a significant reduction in depressive symptoms and increases in self-confidence in relation to caregiving. Tuesdays (9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29), 12-1:30. To register or for more information visit [registration website inserted here.]

Lately I’ve felt overwhelmed and stressed. I’ve noticed that I have been much snappier with my spouse and kids. I’m also really overwhelmed at work and had to take a few days off last quarter because I felt so run down. How do I know when it is time to get help from a therapist? How do I get started? It feels overwhelming!
Thank you, “Out Here Overwhelmed”

Dear “Out Here Overwhelmed,”
I am so glad you reached out and asked this question! Folks seek out the support of a therapist for many reasons, and feeling overwhelmed and “out of sorts” over a significant period of time (more than just a few days here and there) is a great time to get started. We know that the idea of how to find a therapist can seem overwhelming, but here are some simple steps you can take.
- Ask a friend! Do you have a friend or family member who has been in therapy? Ask around- I bet you’d be surprised by how many folks have been in therapy and may have recommendations.
- Ask your clergy! Our clergy are a great resource and are very familiar with therapy and mental health services.
- Use the website psychologytoday.com- this popular website serves as a “search engine” for therapists across the country. You can search by zip code, specialty, insurance provider, and many other filters. You can click on the therapist’s profile and read about their style of therapy and areas of specialty.
- Give us a call at JFS. We’re happy to help link you to one of our therapists or make connections to someone in the community.
- It’s ok to make sure you “click” with your therapist! Have a first session or two with a therapist and decide if the match feels right. Not every therapist is a good match for every client- personality, style, and other factors all determine whether a therapist feels like a good fit. Also, don’t worry about hurting our feelings! We want clients to feel safe and comfortable in therapy, whether that is with us or someone else!
- You’ll know you have a good match when you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist, when you feel that they are a person you can build a relationship with over time, and you feel supported during your session.
Out Here Overwhelmed, you do not have to navigate this challenging time alone! Reach out and get support!

As the school season kicks off, it's important to keep mental well-being on your radar. Remember to:
-
Create a Routine: Consistency helps ease the transition for kids and parents! Work together as a family to create a daily schedule including a morning routine, time for play and relaxation, time for homework/studying and a relaxing screen-free hour before bed!
-
Take Breaks: Encourage your kids and teens to take short breaks during study sessions-this can boost productivity and reduce stress. 🕒 Hint- this works for grown-ups too!
-
Move with Joy: Incorporate physical movement into your day—it’s great for your body and mind! This doesn’t have to be a full “work out!” This can mean a walk around the block, a few stretches through-out the day, or dancing to your favorite song while cleaning up the kitchen after dinner!

September
September is Suicide Prevention Month
This year’s campaign is “Talk Away The Dark.” The theme reinforces the importance of opening up the conversation and reaching out to someone who you think is struggling emotionally. Research has demonstrated that saying something to someone who may be thinking about suicide can deter them from actually acting on those thoughts. So, don’t be afraid to reach out and say something who you think may be struggling. You could save a life.
If you or someone you know is in a mental health crisis call 988.
