40 Years of Helping the Coachella Valley

“In maintaining the high integrity and goals first established by Jim and Jackie Lee Houston, the Houston Family Foundation looks to support leadership through the opportunity to collaborate and enhance the common good by providing funds to support Science/Medical, Education, The Arts and Human Social Services.”  Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) would like to thank the Houston Family Foundation for its generous support of the JFS Case Management program that includes a substantial amount to be used for direct financial assistance when clients face eviction, service interruptions, or can’t afford food or medications.  “I’m overwhelmed by the Houston Family Foundation’s generosity, and I greatly appreciate their willingness to support our efforts.  They astutely recognize the benefit of no-cost case management services and the provision of emergency financial assistance that often resolves household financial emergencies,” said Kraig Johnson, JFS Executive Director.  JFS is grateful for their acknowledgement of these important services that support and strengthen us all.

MEET HCC INTERN VIANEY HOLGUIN

Vianey Holguin graduated from Coachella Valley High School in the top 1% of her class in June 2021 with a 4.5 GPA. She is now a Health Career Connection (HCC) intern working with Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) during a 10-week internship program where Vianey will be focused on supporting the Case Management Program as they engage with community members to offer connections to needed resources, help with complex applications or processes, and even offer emergency financial assistance for overdue rent and utilities, food and medications. Vianey’s goals are to gain a greater understanding of how emergency assistance is approached, strengthen her communication, and gain exposure to the needs of the resources

to help her community. We believe working with the JFS Case Management team offers her a chance to realize these and other goals, and we applaud Vianey for her deep desire to help others. JFS is a committed supporter of our local youth, and we look forward to continuing the work with HCC, OneFuture Coachella Valley, and others to map out, support, and even recruit providers to serve our community. A special thanks to Patricia Etem and Vicky Bocanegra with HCC for working with Vianey and JFS.

Café Europa provides social engagement for our Valley’s local Holocaust survivors who meet regularly to build supportive relationships while participating in social, educational, and holiday activities. JFS is launching a Café Europa Speakers Bureau connecting local residents who lived through atrocities of the

Holocaust with local students, so that survivors’ stories of bravery, love, and tolerance can be shared with students in what is often an extraordinarily moving encounter. For more information: Julie Hirsh, Director of Community Outreach,jhhirsh@jfsdesert.org, 760-325-4088 ext. 103
