JFS Retrospectives

Retrospectives are ways of analyzing the present in relation to the past. Over the next several weeks, until the end of year, we want to remember, reflect, and review the impact together we have made for our community. Based upon our Jewish values, our mission is to provide services for all.

Cancer Care Connection, an affiliate of JFS Delaware, helps people affected by cancer navigate the full range of the issues they face, make informed decisions, and take action on their own behalf. Two JFS staff members, Wendell and Mike, tell us about their experiences with Cancer Care Connection as they navigate a loved one's cancer diagnosis.

“I just wanted to send a shout out to Kathie and the rest of the staff at Cancer Care Connection. My father-in-law was diagnosed with esophageal cancer a few months ago and my mother-in-law has been working with Kathie since. It has been beyond helpful to her and my father-in-law.

My in-laws moved down here to Delaware shortly after us to watch my boys grow up, and that means they don't know anything about the systems and steps to take in this area. Kathie has been supporting the family and helping them go exactly where they need to. My mother-in-law has talked about Kathie and Cancer Care Connection a lot and I can tell she genuinely feels relief right now. So thank you to Janet, Kathie, and the whole team. Being around the process has been really special and I don't know what my family would do without you guys right now.” - Wendell

"It’s always difficult when a family member receives a cancer diagnosis. There’s so much that goes on, not just with the individual, but within the family as well. Cancer Care Connection was top notch. Not only did they provide my mom with support, but they also provided me with a ton of information and support. At my mom’s first appointment, Mel was there, she met my mom in the waiting room. She helped her check in, gave her all the needed information, and set up an appointment tracker connected with me. She showed me around the hospital. It was really an unbelievable amount of support and care that came from Cancer Care Connection. 

I think these services are necessary and so very helpful. When you’re dealing with something like cancer, it is only helpful to have that support. Particularly for people who are a little more siloed or isolated. My mom doesn't really have a big support system, so having someone just to reach out and talk to on the phone and share some stories is not just good medical care, it’s good emotional and mental health care as well. 

Besides the quality of their work, which is amazing, the level of compassion and empathy and understanding that everyone in that program has shown has been unbelievable. I sent an email to get involved in the program, and I don’t think half an hour passed before I got a response back. That’s top notch. I can't recommend Cancer Care Connection enough, and I truly think that my mom and our family would be in a far different place emotionally if we weren’t involved." - Mike
