Why did you choose to volunteer as a Compassionate Companion at JFS?
"I was looking for meaningful ways to spend my time. I met the JFS team at a recent Greenwich Library volunteer fair. JFS caught my interest because I wanted to help the elderly, as I’m getting older myself. I was excited about the possibility of connecting with people."
What has been the most unexpected part of your experience? "I’ve been surprised by the deep connections I’ve made with clients. My first client, Jean, was incredibly energetic and delightful to talk to during our trip to Stratford -- we talked the entire way there and back. Another time, a non-English-speaking client made a meaningful connection through Google Translate; she took my phone and typed: 'I am so grateful for all of your support and help.' The gratitude of clients has been a humbling experience."
Why should people volunteer in the Compassionate Companion Program? "It’s incredibly rewarding. You help in both big and small ways, and it’s clear that you’re making a real difference. The connections you make with clients are fulfilling, and it’s great to know that you truly are helping people."
Summarize volunteering at JFS in three words: "Rewarding, active, connecting. Volunteering wakes me up, gets me out of the house, and helps me do things I otherwise wouldn’t be doing. I look forward to hearing from JFS, seeing what’s next, and helping in any way I can."
