New York State Parks and Westchester County Parks Unanimously Approve Renewal of Public-Private Partnership Agreement with Jay Heritage Center
|
|
New York State Parks and Westchester County Parks have approved the renewal of the Jay Heritage Center’s (JHC) stewardship of the 21.5-acre Jay Property for another 10-year period. Westchester County Executive George Latimer, who personally sponsored ACT 2023-312 in July to affirm the collaboration noted that the public-private partnership amongst the County, New York State Parks, and JHC has been very successful. The legislation was unanimously approved by the Westchester County Board of Legislators 16-0 in August and by the Board of Acquisitions and Contracts on September 7th.
Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson, Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee endorsed continuance of the three-party agreement and highlighted the importance of the landmark itself saying, “It’s used for educational purposes and events of opportunity to honor the site and all that it represents, all of the American history and contributions to the building of the American experience over the centuries,” adding with emphasis, “It’s sacred ground if you will.”

ALLISON STAGG
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th
at 6PM
|
|
Join us on Friday, September 15 for a free talk, reception and book signing with scholar Allison Stagg. Her first book Prints of a New Kind: Political Caricature in the United States details the political strategies and scandals that inspired the first generation of American caricaturists to share news and opinions with their audiences in shockingly radical ways.
Stagg examines printed caricatures that mocked the current events reported in newspapers about the United States’ fledgling government. Among those she profiles is James Akin whose scalding caricature criticizing the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings influenced later artists.

FALL FLORAL DESIGN with
REX TODD ROGERS
Sunday, September 17 at 3pm
|
|
Our annual flower beds and perennial borders are brimming with gorgeous blooms and fall is an ideal time to bring their beauty indoors! We're delighted to invite Rex Todd Rogers of Litchfield, Connecticut to the Jay Estate for some floral design inspiration. Using cosmos, anemones, golden sunflowers and more, he'll show us how to combine colors and textures for maximum effect.
Rex is a creative who is deaf, but being so allows him to intently see and visualize many characteristic ideas in a quieter space. While at University of Michigan, he pursued a career in advocacy for Deaf Rights but was later drawn to expressing himself through interior and floral design. For his many clients, he enjoys juxtaposing traditional elements with contemporary spaces and marrying heirloom pieces with mid-century modern classics.
His spectacular floral arrangements can be found indoors and out. Clients have included Susanna Salk and Nancy Kissinger. Workshop is free and open to the public. Custom arrangements will be auctioned off to benefit JHC. Fall refreshments will be offered!
The event is free but registration is required.

USTA Tours 1916 Indoor Tennis House at Jay Estate; Imagines Future
|
|
Immediately following the US Open and electrifying wins by
Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic, USTA Executive Director & CEO Jennifer Schnitzer and Susan Friedlaender, the Senior Manager of Adult Leagues took the time to visit the historic 1916 Indoor Palmer Tennis House at the Jay Estate. JHC President Suzanne Clary, JHC Tennis Committee Co-Chairs, Lindsay Martin and Nicholas Cassin together with JHC Office Manager Meredith Slater, NY State Assemblyman Steve Otis and his Chief of Staff Lisa Urban led the tour.
In 2015, USTA helped JHC apply for a $391,056 grant from NY State Parks to save the building. Prior to that, years of inattention compounded by Hurricane Sandy damage posed a threat of catastrophic failure to the roof, sill and supporting beams of the historic building. There were no existing photos or plans of the sporting facility so JHC hired award-winning Stephen Tilly Architects and Silman Engineers to create some. They then hired Apple Waterproofing of NYC and successfully completed a first phase of stabilization by 2020. This was the USTA’s first glimpse of the new restoration work.
The group discussed what still needs to be done and financed to make the court playable.
