A hand-drawn schematic buried for 50 years has revealed a forgotten branch of Big Muff history. Now, JHS Pedals and Electro-Harmonix are bringing that lost circuit to life as the Big Muff 2. Its release aligns with the forthcoming book, to be published in Spring 2026, which explores EHX’s untold stories through unseen archives and rare interviews. Together, these two projects uncover and preserve a piece of music-gear history that nearly disappeared.
Throughout the book, readers can follow the untold story of how one of America's greatest companies changed our culture and music through its unorthodox devices. Made On Earth For Rising Stars is the definitive visual history of Electro-Harmonix from 1968 till now — a massive book exploring everything from circuit designers to those seeking to cure death, from flying machines to mass ESP experiments. Featuring Jack White, J Mascis, John Mayer, Wes Borland, Billy Corgan, Bill Frisell, Nels Cline, Adrien Belew, Vernon Reid, and more. Pre-orders are available now.

In 2021, while visiting Bob Myer’s New Jersey home with illustrator and collaborator Daniel Danger, JHS Pedals founder Josh Scott uncovered a hand-drawn schematic labeled “Big Muff – Using (2 Dual Op-Amps).” This unreleased circuit, hidden for decades among Myer’s notebooks and design materials, represents an alternate, previously unknown branch of Big Muff development.
The discovery was remarkable. Although an Op-Amp Big Muff was released in the late 1970s, designed by Michael Abrams and Howard Davis, and later made iconic by Billy Corgan’s use on Siamese Dream. Myers’ op-amp version was set aside and never produced...until now.
After breadboarding the circuit, Scott immediately recognized it as a uniquely aggressive and powerful interpretation of the legendary Big Muff design. The Big Muff 2 offers enhanced low-end, cutting midrange presence, a sharper attack, and exceptional output volume. The pedal will be produced in a big-box wedge enclosure, honoring the format of vintage EHX products while introducing a sound the world has never heard.
