The James Monroe Museum is pleased to welcome our new Office and Store Manager, Bethel Mahoney, who started on May 10. Bethel is originally from Alexandria, Virginia, but grew to love Fredericksburg since attending the University of Mary Washington.
Last May, she graduated from UMW with a bachelor’s degree in music. Bethel previously worked at the University of Mary Bookstore as an Office Administrative Assistant.
When she’s not in the museum you can spot Bethel playing a diverse array of instruments, or doing photography. She is excited to work at the museum and can’t wait to help advance its mission of preservation and education. Welcome, Bethel!

We invite you to begin to discover Monroe, his career, and his world through his bookshelves with our
newly created catalogue.
Staff at the
Papers of James Monroe
used Monroe’s handwritten lists of his books, titles mentioned in his correspondence, and extant copies of books that bear his bookplate or signature to begin to reconstruct his extensive personal library. In addition to browsing by author, title, topic and sources, users are able to link to digital copies of the publications, or
compare Monroe’s library
to that of other prominent Americans such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. An exhibition further exploring the contents and significance of Monroe’s library and featuring his personal copies of books is currently on display at the James Monroe Museum.

Elizabeth Monroe's Necessaire
A necessaire or “etui” is an ornamental traveling case containing small necessary tools for daily use. Similar in concept to a Swiss Army knife, the necessaire often had scissors, needles, tweezers, and even a sliver of ivory on which to write notes.
Necessaires were often designed to be small enough to fit into a lady’s purse, and were considered fashion accessories for the upper class.
Although Mrs. Monroe’s necessaire dates to the mid-18th century, such items were used by the upper class during the time of James Monroe’s second diplomatic mission to France, and would not have been out of place among his wife’s travel accessories.
