The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) is pleased to announce that Platinum, Inc. has committed to fully funding a four-year scholarship through the JMTP Sponsored Scholarship Program. Through this JMTP program, individual or institutional donors can sponsor a young tennis aspirant who would otherwise lack the financial support to fully develop his or her tennis potential, which, of course, can lead to funded higher education and lifelong opportunities for a young player. A donor works with JMTP leadership to set the selection criteria for a named scholarship, and receives regular updates on the selected player’s progress.
Scholarship recipients train exclusively with world-class coaches at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy (JMTA). All Sponsored Scholarships provide for the year-round on and off-court training necessary for a child to play and compete at the highest possible level.
The Platinum, Inc. Scholarship has been awarded to Lara Afolayanka. Lara, a 14 year old from Uniondale, NY, whose father immigrated to the United States from Nigeria, exhibits undeniable athletic potential, mental toughness, and a burning desire to be the best she can be, both on and off the court.
Lara was awarded a scholarship based on her athletic potential during an open JMTA tryout and her tennis has flourished since joining the Academy. Currently ranked No.57 in the nation in her class by Tennis Recruiting, Lara regularly qualifies for national tournaments in her age division. She works hard to balance being a nationally ranked player, and the associated travel demands, with her commitment to remain a top academic student in school.
This scholarship will help Lara prepare for and travel to national tournaments, to capture the attention of college coaches, and to fulfill her tennis and educational dreams. We congratulate Lara and thank Platinum, Inc. for their commitment to the life of a deserving young player.
