We’re looking for a designer who is interested in how design might support complex story-telling and large narratives. The plays contain a dense and enthralling love story with a wide variety of different characters, locations and sub-plots. So we’re looking for a designer who is interested in supporting that narrative, and thinking practically about how to make things clear while also giving a beautiful and elegant representation of the time.

We’re looking for someone who is eloquent in creative conversations, calm in stressful moments, flexible with their creative output, while also being kind and patient with those around them. The production is being made on a very tight budget, so we’re also looking for someone who can engage with those limitations in a creative way.

Requirements:

You must have at least 3 years professional experience, and worked with costume design as part of that experience, either as an associate/assistant to a costume designer, or as part of a wider design. You do not need to have read the books! We will share the plays with shortlisted candidates.

Designers will have access to a Costume Supervisor as support but must be ‘hands on’ themselves and be willing to be involved with the sourcing of costumes. Designers must have experience of working with period costume hire companies and working with a supervisor to manage and arrange fittings for actors.

An excellent production manager is on board to cost and manage the set build and cost and manage the costume design and hiring/ buying.

To Apply

We want to hear about you as a designer - the kind of work you’ve seen recently that’s excited you, what you consider to be the cornerstones of your style or approach, your strengths and any weaknesses you’re aware of, and whatever else you think relevant. We’d also love to know about any experiences you have with telling period stories - either from this or another historical era. If there were things you learnt from that experience, positive or negative, we’d love to know what they are.

Please feel free to send your response as a single-sided A4 document, as a 2-minute video, or as a 2-minute voice note.

Please also send us

  • your CV
  • a link to your website or a downloadable portfolio
  • a completed Equal Opps form.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have experienced racism, candidates who live with a disability, female candidates, LGBTQIA+ candidates, non-binary candidates and working-class candidates.

Process:

Applications must be submitted by 4/02/2024. Please send your application to submissions.forsytesaga@gmail.com

We are interested in applicants from a wide variety of life experiences and skills, not only those with theatre backgrounds. Perhaps you are an events manager wanting to move into theatre. Maybe you are a management consultant who wants to open a new creative chapter. You could be a community organiser, or be working in the charity sector. We want to meet you.

We are looking for individuals who have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Proven professional experience with producing nationally-touring theatre in the UK
  • Proven professional experience with events management
  • Proven experience with innovative project leadership
  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre Production, Arts Management, or a related field

In addition, our producer must have:

  • An affinity for the mission and charitable objects of SCRUM, most especially in designing and building innovative processes for collaborative making
  • A passion for collaboration and working collectively
  • A self-driven initiative, strong organisational skills and the ability to work flexibly and independently to meet deadlines
  • An interest in the cultural and financial state of UK Theatre, and a passion for improving working conditions for artists and accessibility in performances
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Experience with writing contracts
  • Experience with fundraising

The following skills would also be desirable:

  • Experience of working with community theatre and arts education projects
  • Experience of working with meanwhile spaces
  • A thorough network of contacts across the theatre sector
  • Experience in writing successful ACE applications
  • Working relationships with venues across the UK
  • The ability to communicate financial and specialist information to artists in an accessible way
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Mailchimp, Monday.com and forms.app

What is the fee? *

The salary for the initial 3-month contract is £5737.50 (36 days, £150/day + £112.50 monthly 'responsibility bonus’)

*All SCRUM staff are paid the same day rate of £150p/d. Certain roles involve taking responsibility for the charity's KPIs, therefore to reflect the higher level of labour involved, those roles receive a fixed responsibility bonusat the end of each month. These bonuses are taken from a pool allocated by the Board, agreed together by the collective, and reviewed by the collective on a quarterly basis.

Tell us about the job *

This position requires a dedicated and ambitious individual with a strong background in project management, as well as someone with a passion for collaborative processes and a principled commitment to labour ethics.

In this role, you’ll be collaborating with our collective of makers to help transform an empty commercial space in the heart of London into a hub for performances, training and education projects for under-served communities.

A little bit about SCRUM Theatre… We’re a one-year-old CIO committed to making theatre more equitable and accessible for the next generation of makers and audiences, by prioritising the conditions for artists to make their best work. We’re championed by leading UK theatre-makers, including Adrian Lester, Nick Hytner, Lyndsey Turner, and Declan Donnellan. We operate as a democratic collective, where the Company Artists work collaboratively in order to deliver projects. As the Producer, you will take your mandate from the company’s decisions, and then lead the execution of the voted-upon strategy.

In an initial 3-month contract, the Producer will deliver projects integral to the launch of our production tour in late 2024. You will:

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute a paid week of R&D towards the Company's 2024 touring production
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute a fundraiser event
  • Create a strategy document for the delivery of the Twelfth Night tour in late 2024, including timelines, budgets, and projected income streams
  • Form relationships with the whole collective, and most especially the Co-Leads and Board of Trustees.

Following the end of the 3-month contract, the Company Artists and Board of Trustees will review the success of the Producer’s projects, and the Producer will give feedback to the Company and Board about their experience in the role, constructive criticisms of the organisation, and plans for how to shape the role in future.

Should the Producer, Board, and Company Artists all agree, an extended contract will be offered and the position will transition into the role of a long-term Company Producer, whose responsibilities will be to:

  • Be responsible for the financial oversight and health of the company and charity
  • Be responsible for the business strategy of the company of the charity
  • Build a strong relationship with ACE and other funding bodies
  • Build and maintain relationships with touring partners in ACE and DCMS Priority Places and Levelling Up for Culture Places
  • Ensure that the charity’s two core education programmes have grown and are servicing beneficiaries according to SCRUM’s vision and charitable objects
  • Improve SCRUM’s income stream in 2024 and beyond
  • Play an active role in introducing SCRUM Theatre as a vital new voice in UK theatre

After an additional nine months, SCRUM Theatre plans to develop the Company Producer into an executive role within the charity.

What will the hiring process be? *

To apply, please provide a CV and covering letter of no more than a page and return it to Lucie Dawkins and Dominic Applewhite via the email co-leads@scrumtheatre.co.uk, with “Producer Application” in the subject line.

Alternatively, we welcome video or audio applications of no more than 5 minutes in length, or any other formats that would be more accessible to you.
