Albert J. Ellis Airport Update

Albert J. Ellis Airport Director Chris White calls the hub's $43.9 million upgrade an overdue - and immense - "redevelopment."

Bids have been received and approved for the general aviation terminal, by the Onslow County Board of Commissioners. The Wilmington-based Clancy & Theys Construction Company, was approved for construction of the general aviation executive terminal for $4,853,999.22.

Construction continues at the 67,000 square-foot, two-story, three-gate passenger terminal that will replace the original building created in 1970. The new passenger terminal - will expand operational spaces with more screening, waiting, and boarding areas.

The $43.9 million redevelopment project will tap $28.6 million in federal funds and grants; $13.3 million in locally generated funds - including airport revenue and $8.5 million the county borrowed for the project, White said.

Other additions slated for Ellis Airport include a new aircraft-control tower, more hangars, a runway extension and more paving rehabilitation.
