TEP Update

They met - they talked...and talked

Route B4 has been approved

For the past two weeks, the Arizona Corporation Commission Line Siting Committee (LSC) reviewed possible routes for TEP's Midtown Reliability Project application. The Committee not only reviewed TEP’s preferred route for the project, but all the alternative routes. Every one of the possible routes was also visited in person by members of the Committee. As proposed by TEP, all routes do call for over-ground transmission lines that go right through the heart of the city.

Underground Arizona was an intervening party in the case, presented testimony and responded each day to the committee’s numerous questions. Dan Dempsey, representing Underground Arizona, also cross-examined individual witnesses who support TEP. A main focus of Underground Arizona’s testimony has been to show that undergrounding the project where ordinances and plans require, is feasible.

The LSC concluded its hearing yesterday afternoon. The Committee approved the TEP preferred route, B4, which goes west on Grant from the DeMoss-Petrie substation to Park Ave., then south on Park through Jefferson Park to Adams, Adams east to Vine, Vine to the proposed substation. From the Vine substation, the line goes back out Adams west to Park, Park south to Speedway and Speedway to Euclid, then mainly down Euclid to 36th St. to the Kino substation.

The next step in the local process is that TEP will file for an special exceptions permit for the proposed Vine substation. The viability of the selected route, rests with TEP's ability to secure a zoning exceptions permit. This is a fully public process with neighborhood meetings, a public hearing, and one which requires the project to be compatible with the University Area Plan (UAP). TEP will submit its application to the Zoning Examiner for a zoning exception likely within the coming month.

At the state level, the next step is that the LSC's decision selecting a particular route now goes forward to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). The Commission could take up the case for final decision about the routes as soon as its next open meeting, on August 13, 2024.

Information and details about both meetings will follow in the very near future.

Building a Resilient Neighborhood-BaRN

Are Our Tucson Water Supplies Resilient?

Building a Resilient Neighborhood (BaRN) is a coalition of Tucson residents from diverse neighborhoods. Inspired by Physicians for Social Responsibility, they have come together to spread the word among neighbors about extreme weather and build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.

Resilience in our neighborhoods:

You are invited to 1-hr informational Zoom sessions on building a resilient community by making connections between neighbors and preparing for climate-related emergencies. These sessions are once or twice monthly via Zoom.

For more info, contact: rbolza@me.com or stuartfieldmoody@hotmail.com

Prepare for the occasional flood..!

For the ninth consecutive year, DTM will assist residents concerned with flooding by offering free self-serve sandbags in the east parking lot of Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way, at Reid Park. DTM staff will monitor the weather forecast as well as the National Weather Service to open the self-serve sandbag program ahead of the first forecasted storm, to ensure the community is prepared.

This location will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sand and sandbags will be provided by DTM staff, and residents should bring their own shovel. To accommodate as many residents as possible with sandbags, there is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. Be sure to follow DTM on social media to be informed about the opening of the self-serve sandbag program. Since the sandbag program began in 2016, DTM has distributed approximately 177,200 sandbags to the community.

Protecting the traveling public on City streets during Tucson’s summer thunderstorm season is the objective of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility’s (DTM) Operation Splash campaign. As weather patterns shift to bring moisture into Tucson, crews from DTM’s Streets Maintenance Division will deliver and stage barricades at hundreds of dip crossings throughout the city.

During Monsoon, DTM Street Maintenance staff will be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week through mid-September. As washes flood, crews will close roadways at dip crossings and washes using the more than 500 barricades that will be placed on the side of the roadways, near the crossings.

PLASTIC RECYCLE - 2 ways to do it

Must use the orange bags after July 1

ByFusion, the company that uses recycled plastics to create construction blocks, will soon be breaking ground for a plant in Tucson. In the meantime, please be patient and work with Environmental Services. The City IS recycling the plastic you save!

As of July 1, residents must use the orange Hefty ReNew bag to drop off materials. Starter kits of Hefty Renew bags are available at Wards 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 during office hours. Residents can also purchase the Hefty ReNew orange bags at their local Walmart or Fry’s. Residents in participating areas can request a free Hefty ReNew starter kit at https://bit.ly/HeftyStarterKit

Each orange bag features a list of hard to recycle items that can be collected in the bag for recycling. Fill the bag with those items and when it’s full, tie it up tightly and bring the bag to a participating orange roll-off location.
