Get 'em before they make thorns! Ouch
Our rains have brought out the weeds.. Watch for these goathead vines and get them early! If allowed to mature, they are quite a menace. The best way to foil their dastardly plan is by pulling each plant out by the roots and throwing it in the trash. Look for feathery leaves, small yellow flowers and of course, small, thorny stickers. For more information and better photos, see Goathead Warriors.
Brush and Bulky-
Coming the Week of August 26
| |
HAVE YOUR ITEMS FOR BRUSH AND BULKY
AT THE CURB BY 6 AM ON MONDAY
There is no way of knowing the route the crew will take so you need to have your items at the curb by 6:00 AM on Aug. 26. Once they go down your street, the crew does not come back.
Brush and Bulky uses a Bobcat to pick up items to put them in the truck, so make a single pile at the curb in an easily accessible spot. Brush and Bulky will NOT enter your property to pick up piles. Please make sure the pile is NOT near a fire hydrant, your mailbox, trees, power poles, your wall, gas meter, etc. Items in the pile cannot be longer than 5 feet or they will not fit in the truck.
Brush & Bulky will collect:
- Brush, tree trunks, branches and other green waste (up to 5 feet long and 24 inches in diameter)
- Lumber (up to 5 feet long and stacked in a separate pile)
- PVC and metal pipes (up to 5 feet long)
- Railroad ties (limit 5)
- Furniture, carpet, and doors

- Cacti (must be contained - up to 25 lbs.)
- Appliances (remove freezer/refrigerator doors)
- Car tires (limit of five automobile tires)
- Metal drums (empty and cut in half)
Brush and Bulky will NOT collect:
- Any excess over the 10 cubic-yard limit
- Any items other than those listed above, such as
- Stone/bricks/concrete/aggregates
- Construction debris
- Hazardous waste like paint/oil/pesticides/solvents/liquids
- Glass/mirrors

Good News for Mountain Avenue
As a result of the North University neighborhood's ongoing concern about the Helen and Mountain intersection and continuing worries about cyclist and pedestrian safety and increased vehicular traffic expressed by numerous neighborhoods all along Mountain Ave., including Jefferson Park, there's good news.
North University is in the process of getting greatly needed improvements at the Helen and Mountain intersection, which should significantly increase safety in the area.
In related news, the committee for Prop 411 Safe Streets has approved funding for a project to install vertical "delineators" on Mountain Ave, upgrading the street to a fully protected bike lane between Helen and Ft. Lowell. Not only will this upgrade protect cyclists, but it should slow traffic on Mountain.
There is no concept or schedule yet for the project, but the Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is researching different types of vertical separators. They will share info, timeline, design, etc., over the coming months on this project.
Jefferson Park has asked that we and neighborhoods along the route be updated, etc., as the design and the project moves along. Ben Elias, project manager, responded that we will be kept in the loop and that DTM is "...excited to make sure Mountain Ave is truly a Bicycle Priority Street and improve safety for everyone along the corridor."

Not such good News
Planning & Development proposes new zoning
| |
At the last Campus and Community Relations (CCRC) meeting we learned that Tucson's Planning and Development Services (PDSD) is proposing a new zoning code to allow 6 story buildings along arterial and collector streets. Jefferson Park's Mountain Ave. and Park Ave. are collector streets. Grant and Campbell are arterial streets.
The proposed zoning would require an entire block to be allotted to the building--all four sides of the block would be leveled. Meaning folks, that 25+ homes could be leveled for such a project. Should that happen, Jefferson Park might lose its National Register Historic District status due to a loss of contributing properties. To review the proposal, https://corridor-redevelopment-tools-cotgis.hub.arcgis.com/
The Jefferson Park board has informed PDSD that such a rezoning would hurt neighborhoods and historic districts, and that we strongly oppose any such zoning change. The letter can be found on the Jefferson Park website at http://www.jeffersonpark.info/pdsd.html.

TEP Update
Route B4, down Park Ave has been approved
| |
Following a two week public hearing before the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee, Tucson Electric Power (TEP) was granted a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) for the construction of both the preferred route, Route B4, as well as two alternative routes. Detailed maps illustrating the approved route corridors are available on the project website at tep.com/midtown-reliability-project.
Underground Arizona was an intervening party in the case, presented testimony and responded each day to the committee’s numerous questions. Dan Dempsey, representing Underground Arizona, also cross-examined individual witnesses who support TEP. A main focus of Underground Arizona’s testimony has been to show that undergrounding the project where ordinances and plans require, is feasible.
At the state level, the next step is that the LSC's decision goes forward to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). The Commission will take up the case for final decision about the routes at an open meeting, tentatively scheduled for early September 2024. As of this printing, a date has not been set for the ACC hearing.
Following the ACC's decision, TEP will file for an special exceptions permit for the proposed Vine substation. The viability of the selected route rests with TEP's ability to secure a zoning exceptions permit. This is a fully public process with a neighborhood meeting, a public hearing, and one which requires the project to be compatible with the University Area Plan (UAP).
Information and details about both meetings and how you can get involved will follow in the near future.

Building a Resilient Neighborhood-BaRN
Are Our Tucson Water Supplies Resilient?
Building a Resilient Neighborhood (BaRN) is a coalition of Tucson residents from diverse neighborhoods. Inspired by Physicians for Social Responsibility, they have come together to spread the word among neighbors about extreme weather and build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
Resilience in our neighborhoods:
You are invited to 1-hr informational Zoom sessions on building a resilient community by making connections between neighbors and preparing for climate-related emergencies. These sessions are once or twice monthly via Zoom.

PLASTIC RECYCLE - 2 ways to do it
Must use the orange bags after July 1
| |
ByFusion, the company that uses recycled plastics to create construction blocks, will soon be breaking ground for a plant in Tucson. In the meantime, please be patient and work with Environmental Services. The City IS recycling the plastic you save!
As of July 1, residents must use the orange Hefty ReNew bag to drop off materials. Starter kits of Hefty Renew bags are available at Wards 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 during office hours. Residents can also purchase the Hefty ReNew orange bags at their local Walmart or Fry’s. Residents in participating areas can request a free Hefty ReNew starter kit at https://bit.ly/HeftyStarterKit
Each orange bag features a list of hard to recycle items that can be collected in the bag for recycling. Fill the bag with those items and when it’s full, tie it up tightly and bring the bag to a participating orange roll-off location.
