Merry Christmas!

Thankful.

That is how I feel during Christmas. I know that is what Thanksgiving is supposed to be all about, but for me, Christmas is when I start reflecting on the year. It is a great time to think about everything that has gone well and what opportunities are still out there at work and home.

Here at JPII, I am thankful for having a job that I look forward to every day. I am constantly impressed with the high-quality work our teachers and coaches do that engages our students. When I look back at all our students' positive achievements this semester, it is clear that we positively impact their lives.

My favorite class in high school was physics, largely because of the teacher, Mr. Yerian. He made every lesson interesting and was incredibly engaging. My father was a naval aviator who had taught me to fly at a young age, so by the time I got to physics in high school; I was pretty well-versed in how airplanes flew. Physics was the most welcome respite from the rest of the day because it was easy to understand, and I could see all the everyday applications. My plan in high school was to go to college, study aerospace engineering, and work for Boeing. While that plan didn’t quite work out, I often think about Mr. Yerian and what an inspiration he was for me.

I think it is important to remember that we are influencing students in every class, regardless of the subject.  I learned so many things in high school that were peripheral to the actual lesson being taught, and as we all know, your subject matter is a medium for teaching many life lessons. So, as we finish the semester, let’s all remember that we are here to engage students and prepare them for the future of their choosing.

Sincerely,

Michael Browning

What is the Christmas Purse?

It is a monetary communal gift, designed to show gratitude to all John Paul II High School staff and faculty. We are so blessed with people who work hard throughout the year enriching our student's lives. Help us to show our appreciation by giving to the Christmas Purse!

The Christmas Purse is also meant to simplify your life at this busy time of year. By writing one check, you will be able to cover all faculty and staff members on your shopping list, eliminating the need to shop for individual gifts. All money collected is equally distributed to the entire JPII staff and faculty. Please give! Every dollar counts and is greatly appreciated.

You can donate online by clicking here or you can donate with a check, please make payable to JPII PTSO and write 'Christmas Purse' in the memo.

Please bring checks to the school by Tuesday, December 12th. Checks may be placed in the 'Christmas Purse' box on the Reception Desk at the school. If you'd like your gift to remain anonymous, please write a note and attach it to the check.

Thank you so much for your generosity!

'Twas the day of the dress-down, December the fourteenth,

When all through the halls, the excitement did beam.

The sweaters were hung in closets with care,

In hopes that our event soon would be there.

The students were nestled all snug in their chairs,

With visions of patterns and lights everywhere.

And I in my sweater, with bells that would jingle,

Had just settled down for a day full of mingling.

When out in the gym, there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.

Away to the commons, I flew like a flash,

To join in the fun, to the Christmas sweater bash.

The sweaters on display were a sight to behold,

With sparkles and sequins and stories untold.

Some flashed like a beacon, some played a tune,

All filling the room with a merry festoon.

From Rudolph to Frosty, from trees to elves small,

Each sweater unique, adorning one and all.

The laughter contagious, the spirit so bright,

This dress-down day was a wondrous sight.

So, join us this Thursday, wear your sweater with pride,

Let’s celebrate together, side by side.

Bring joy to the season, in every which way,

Merry Christmas to all, in your sweaters this day!
