Happy Fall Everyone!

With the weather changing and the first quarter complete, I hope everyone is having a great year and is focused on helping students reach their fullest potential. As I started thinking about what I would like to write about this week, my eyes fell on a sheet of paper on my desk on which I had written down thoughts that helped me stay focused on doing my best work for students. I wrote, “Parents know their children better than we ever will; therefore, treat them as expert consultants.”

As a young teacher, I had a wonderful mentor at Lyles Middle School in Garland, Terry Hagar. In addition to being a master teacher with a long history of success, he was terrific at coaching students and teachers. One of the first things he taught me was the importance of building relationships with parents. We would start calling and emailing parents the second week of school, focusing on the positive things students did in class. Communication with parents not only built strong relationships with parents, but it was also a great way to help students because they would hear positive feedback from their parents, which always encouraged them, which led to higher engagement and effort in the classroom.

Developing relationships with parents early in the year makes interactions later in the year that might not be positive much easier. Parents are vital stakeholders in the education process and are often underutilized, and one of our best tools as educators is collaboration. As we all know, so many times, students struggling in the classroom face similar challenges outside of school and at home. By starting the year with positive feedback for parents regarding their students, teachers set the students up for success and give the parents, experts on their students, every reason to collaborate.

I want to challenge everyone to continue to form young people through your area or specialty and help them reach their full potential. We ensure the best possible outcomes when we collaborate with parents and focus on providing world-class experiences for our students.

Sincerely,

Michael Browning

On the 26th of September, HOSA met with local students from UTD for the MINI Med Program to study Orthopedics, which is the study of bones and joints. During this session we discussed various injuries and viewed xrays and pictures to diagnose and discuss the different types of fractures and how they are caused along with treatments. The most active part of the session was when students made casts for each other using plaster.
