American Heart Month

The number one cause of deaths for most groups, heart disease, affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.

Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? You can take an active role in reducing your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. This is a great chance to start some heart-healthy habits!

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month is observed each year from February 1 – March 1 to recognize the generations of Black and African Americans who struggled with adversity and to celebrate their many contributions to the United States.

Upcoming Signature Event

Join Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks for the 9th Annual Prostate Cancer Screening Event, a Healthy Lives Matter Initiative, on February 18, 2023 at Moncrief Cancer Institute. Prostate cancer screening includes education and a blood test. FREE meal will be provided.

Community Resources

JPS Health Network in collaboration with the Tarrant Area Food Bank has brought the RED Bus to several JPS locations. The purpose of the RED Bus is to provide resource assistance and nutrition education to families experiencing food insecurity.

COVID-19 & Flu Updates

As part of a COVID-19 Health Disparity Grant, JPS Community Outreach is conducting a voluntary survey to help us improve and reduce COVID-19 health disparities. This survey will help us gather information about ways people reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Do you need a COVID-19 or flu test or vaccine?

If you are a patient at JPS:

JPS patients can use MyChart or call 817-702-1100 to schedule an appointment with their PCP.

If you are NOT a patient at JPS:

Those needing COVID-19 testing or vaccines can visit tarrantcounty.com to find a location nearest you.

CDC recommends that people ages 5 years and older get one updated (bivalent) booster that protects against the original COVID-19 variant and the new variants if it has been at least two months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose.

People who have gotten more than one original (monovalent) booster that only protects against the original COVID-19 variant are also recommended to get an updated (bivalent) booster to get protection from new variants also.

Community Partner Spotlight

For nearly 100 years, the American Heart Association has been fighting heart disease and stroke and helping families and communities thrive. The American Heart Association is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and has offices in Fort Worth, as well as other urban and rural communities throughout the country.

Each February, we invite our communities to celebrate American Heart Month, a time to pay special attention to understanding, preventing, and treating heart disease – the leading cause of death in the nation. We also recognize that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than all cancers combined. The reality is currently, more than 44% of women ages 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease[i]. In addition, Women account for more than 57% of total stroke deaths but also account for more than 4 million survivors over the age of 20.

To ensure that we are addressing this important issue, we invite you to be part of our mission through the following Calls to Action.

February 2023 Calls to Action:

  • Be Aware – All women need to be aware that cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat. Learn more about heart disease and stroke in women at GoRedforWomen.org.
  • Take Action – Know your numbers, know your family history, take charge of your health – mind and body and participate in research. Help close the gender gap in cardiovascular research by joining Research Goes Red. Learn more at GoRedforWomen.org/researchgoesred.
  • Advocate – Significant disparities persist for women, particularly women of color, in access to quality care, representation in research, and bystander CPR. Join the fight against heart disease and stroke at YoureTheCure.org.
  • Learn - A woman is less likely to receive CPR from a bystander than a man so be the beat for a woman you love by becoming a lifesaver and learning Hands-Only CPR today by visiting heart.org.
  • Join Us - On Friday, March 3, 2023, 500 guests from our community will unite together to enjoy a delicious lunch, an inspiring keynote address, a moving survivor story, a silent auction, and more. Most of all, we will join together to raise funds and awareness that losing even one woman to heart disease is too many.
