National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for racial and ethnic minority groups to get access to mental health and substance-use treatment services.

Throughout the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will focus on promoting tools and resources addressing the stigma about mental health among racial and ethnic minority populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas

Helping Fragile Babies and Breastfeeding Mothers

Located in Fort Worth near Benbrook, Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas is a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the health and survival of infants through breastfeeding advocacy and the safe, equitable provision of donor human milk.

Connecting Mothers With Extra Breastmilk to Fragile Babies

Mothers can donate their extra frozen breastmilk after completing a health screening, medical history and blood test. Then, milk is thawed, pasteurized in the milk bank’s laboratory and tested before it’s delivered to hospital NICUs, outpatient babies and some healthy newborns. Because human milk contains bioactive factors that provide immunological protection, it can save little lives.

Helping Families Reach Their Breastfeeding Goals

A free breastfeeding support program, called Baby Café, is available at the milk bank and also virtually. Hosted by a certified lactation consultant, parents can receive individualized support, weigh their baby, ask questions and meet other families. Drop-in sessions are available every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon; Baby Café en español, 2o y 4o martes de cada mes; Virtual sessions are every second and fourth Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

To donate milk or get more information about lactation support, visit www.texasmilkbank.org or call 817-810-0071, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
