JPS ANNOUNCES PLAN TO REDESIGN SCHOOLS IN SUPPORT OF 'EXCELLENCE FOR ALL'
|
|
Jackson Public Schools
released its three-year plan for school redesign throughout the District, which will expand the District’s pre-kindergarten offerings, support the development of a world-class teaching and learning center, and generate cost savings that pave the way for long-term strategic investments.

|
Zacchaeus Wallace of Murrah was one of four winners from Mississippi at Jobs for America's Graduates Student Leadership Academy. Wallace won the second place award for math.

|
MURRAH STUDENTS NAMED SPEECH & DEBATE ACADEMIC ALL AMERICANS
|
Four Murrah High School seniors Jeffrey Caliedo, Maisie Brown, Abigail Showalter, and Evan Morrisey have been named Academic All Americans by the National Speech & Debate Association. Only eight other students in the school's history have achieved this recognition.

JPS WEBSITES UNDERGOING REDESIGN

JPS is partnering with Blackboard once again to redesign its District and school websites. The project will enhance the existing responsive and engaging experience enjoyed by site visitors.

STUDENTS FROM SIX JPS SCHOOLS TAKE OATH TO SERVE AS TAP MEDIATORS
|
Students from Blackburn, Kirksey and Whitten Middle Schools and Callaway, Jim Hill and Wingfield High Schools were inducted as Talk About the Problems (TAP) peer mediators.

2019 DISTRICT READING FAIR WINNERS
|
Winners of the District Reading Fair competition received trophies, medals and other recognition for their accomplishments. The district and school level reading fairs provide scholars the opportunity to share their favorite book through a storyboard or multimedia display.

JPS ALUM ZEITA MERCHANT MAKING COAST GUARD HISTORY
|
A 22-year veteran of the Guard, Merchant has been selected for promotion from commander to captain. This will make her only the third African American female captain in Coast Guard history.
|
|
|
JPS BANDS EARN TOP RATINGS AT FALL COMPETITIONS
|
Four JPS marching bands excelled in competitive events this fall. Jim Hill earned the Overall Best Band award at Copiah Invitational. Forest Hill, Jim Hill and Callaway earned Superior ratings, and Murrah earned a rating of Excellent at the MHSAA State Marching Evaluations.

The 2019 Pepsi-JPS Holiday Basketball Tournament will take place
December 26–28, 2019
. Games will be played at Cardozo and Northwest Jackson IB Middle Schools on December 26 and 27. Championship games will be played on December 28 at the JSU Athletics & Assembly Center located on Prentiss Street. Admission is $10.

JPS TO INSTITUTE CLEAR BAG POLICY AT ATHLETIC EVENTS
|
JPS fans will be able to carry bags that are clear plastic or vinyl and meet certain size requirements to enter all sporting event venues. The procedures go into effect on January 6, 2020.
|

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kaleb Trinidad,
a fifth grade scholar at Baker Elementary School. He enjoys playing baseball. His team won second place in a baseball tournament held in Pearl, Miss. Kaleb has won academic awards in every grade. He would like to be a professional baseball player. His backup plan is to enlist in the Army.

Terrence Brent Jr. delivered the Words of Encouragement
. Terrence is a senior at Jim Hill High School. He is a member of the Student Oriented Academic Research Program, 100 Black Men of Jackson, and section leader of the Jim Hill Graveyard Thunder Drumline. After high school, He plans to attend Morehouse College and major in pre-law.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Skyla Dear,
a third grade scholar at Boyd Elementary School. Skyla is an honor student. She loves gymnastics, and her future plans are to attend Louisiana State University and continue to compete in gymnastics.

Kyita Welchlin delivered the Words of Encouragement
. Kyita is an eighth grader at Bailey APAC Middle School and a theatre student at Power. She is on the JPS swim team and the Bailey soccer team. She also creates costumes for New Stage, and she is active in her church.
|
|
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tyler Arrington
, an eighth grade scholar at Peeples Middle School. He is on the football and basketball teams and the school's yearbook staff. As the reigning Mr. Peeples, Tyler is also a member of the Student Government Association. He plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in mathematics and engineering.

Cadet Lt. Col. Ramiyah Thompson delivered the Words of Encouragement.
The Wingfield High School junior is the top student in her class with a 3.97 GPA. She is on the soccer team and the All-City championship cross country team. She is president of the junior class and a TAP mediator. Ramiyah is a 2019 MOWW Youth Leadership Conference selectee.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tylen McLaurin
, an eighth grade student at Powell Middle School. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, Principal's Student Advisory Committee, and Student Council. Tylen is an honor roll and Proficient/Advanced scholar. Her career goal is to become an Astrophysicist at NASA.

Reonna Russell delivered the Words of Encouragement
. She is a graduating senior in the International Baccalaureate Program at Jim Hill High School and the reigning Miss Jim Hill. Reonna is a member of the Drama Club, captain of the soccer team, and plays power forward on the girls basketball team. She plans to major in business at Jackson State University.
