"Beauty Calls Us Together"
with Rev. Karen
This year is the 100th anniversary of the first flower ceremony, as created by Norbert Capek in Prague. We’ll celebrate with story and music created especially for this occasion, and by co-creating a beautiful bouquet that symbolizes the many blessings of our beloved community.
If you’re attending in person, please bring a flower for our communal vases. If you’re attending virtually, you can drop off a flower during Rev. Karen’s office hours at Reeb on Friday, June 2 (noon-3:00).

The Share the Plate for May 28 and June 4 is One City Schools, a non-profit running public pre-schools and grade schools with a Village model of raising successful children. Its programming is carefully designed to overcome the large and persistent school achievement gap for Black and Brown children in Madison. The way the school and its curriculum is structured, with connection to the community and the families served, offers a model for restructuring public education. It focuses on the needs of black and brown children, and, at the same time, is open to all.
Our June theme: The Path of Delight
Our June theme invites us to notice and remember things that bring delight. In this space, you’ll find a new invitation into reflection on our monthly theme every week.
Check-in question: Who taught you about cultivating delight?
put your attention on suffering – which is constant and everywhere – and it is all you will see. joy will come, and laughter, but you will find it brief, possibly a distraction.
put your attention on joy, being connected and feeling whole, and you will find it everywhere. your heart will still break. you will know grief. but you will find it a reasonable cost for the random abundance of miracles, and the soft wild rhythms of love.

Minister's Musings
This month’s theme, the path of delight, invites us to put our attention on beauty and joy and wholeness, even when the pain within and around us threatens to overwhelm... What would it feel like to have access to that beautiful and necessary feeling of opening our hearts and spirits to delight, at any time?

Music Ministry
The Sacred Breath Choir and I are thrilled to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Flower Ceremony with “Beauty Calls Us Together,” a cantata created special for the occasion. This special collection of music was created by Kathryn Canan (CA), Rev. Suzelle Lynch (WI), and Ruben Piirainen (WI). It also features words and music by Anne Merdinger and Nobert Čapek. We are looking forward to sharing this music with our community on Sunday!
The Sacred Breath Choir will gather this Thursday evening from 7-8:30pm. The choir will be featured at the Flower Communion service on June 4. Sacred Breath welcomes folks of all experience levels. Come join us in spirit and song!
Please send an email to music@jruuc.org with any questions or thoughts you have about music ministry at JRUUC.
This Sunday’s shared music:

Short-Term Housing Needed for New Asylum-Seekers
Can you help our immigrant siblings who have escaped death threats and terror in their home countries and need short-term housing in Madison until they get their own apartment? The JRUUC Immigrant and Refugee Rights Team needs someone to host a married couple from Colombia for a week or two starting about May 29, and someone to host a young man from Nicaragua for up to one month starting June 1. Reeber Leila Pine knows the Nicaraguan and the Colombians, whom she is housing this week. Please contact her at sabinosanctuary@gmail.com if you might be able to provide even just one week of housing for these wonderful new neighbors. Thank you for your kindness and compassion!

Share Your Thoughts on Adopting the 8th Principle at JRUUC
“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
Adopting the 8th Principle at Reeb would be an explicit statement that we acknowledge the need for work to dismantle racism and other oppressions within ourselves and our congregations and commit to doing so. Please tell us what you think about doing this by filling out this survey.

What's Happening in Our Community
General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists, where we conduct business of the Association, explore the theological underpinnings of our faith, and lean fully into our mission and principles. This is a great year to go, especially for first-timers! There will be exciting work done on the process of revising Article II of our Bylaws, worship is always wonderful, and it’s an amazing experience to be surrounded by thousands of UUs. Early bird registration ends on February 28, and there are many opportunities for financial support. Follow these links for general information, volunteer opportunities, other financial support, registration, and housing reservations.
The General Assembly and Conference Services Team leads the initiative to ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are woven throughout, from planning to fruition. You’re invited to watch this video about historical trauma and transformative healing, which is informing our work.

Voting for UUA President opens June 1. This is the final stage of a process that began in the spring of 2022. The Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt has been affirmed as the sole candidate for UUA President after no additional candidates emerged from the nomination by petition period. For more information on the election process, and to view recordings of Presidential Candidate Forums, click here. Delegates will also cast votes at General Assembly on the proposal for a revised Article II, which reflects feedback from thousands of Unitarian Universalists.
