August Happenings - Jersey Shore Running Club
Volume XXIV No. 8
Don't forget! Our Annual Club Barbecue Meeting is August 25!
The unforgettable Annual JSRC Club BBQ meeting is coming up. It will be at the Deal Firehouse on Brighton Avenue in Deal beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The Deal Fire Department will be grilling burgers, dogs, etc. as always it is a "covered dish" type of event. Tina Duda is coordinating the additional food to avoid too much of a single dish and Joe Freeman has the sign up list of who is bringing which dish to the event.
So let them know what you want to bring (don't forget your $5 for the meeting!) and show up ready to meet and eat!
We will need help setting up, if you can arrive early to help set up, we would appreciate it!
See you on Tuesday, August 25!

About Footnotes
Footnotes is a publication of Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC), a non-profit, philanthropic organization.
This publication is produced monthly.
JSRC is a member of RRCA & USATF(Member No. CLUB 0196).

Members are encouraged to submit press releases or articles of interest to fellow Club members. Submit your
information by the deadline to

If you wondered why you haven't received your newsletter in a timely manner, here's why
Our membership web site doesn't link names with email addresses and to follow best practices and anti-spam protocols, we need to have our members name and email address at the very minimum to email a member.

In April, this editor spent 30 hours matching the current (that means paid up) membership list names to email addresses (and member number) so the newsletter could go out.

Unfortunately, this editor doesn't have the time to do that each and every month. So, we are requesting that if you are a  member who knows of a member or a new member who would like to see Footnotes arrive in your inbox each month,

Please take the time to send your information to the  editor by clicking here. You may also send updated email addresses to the same link.

It will be very much appreciated.

Saturday in the Park
Race director Penny Hinck informed Club members at the last meeting that the Saturday in the Park event is in its 22nd year.
Since the beginning it has been a fundraiser for women's causes and a Women Only event. Volunteers are needed at every level -- especially on race day. There are plenty of prizes and drawings for both runners and volunteers. Shirts and hats will be given to all registrants. Here's your chance to sign up and run the famous "bowl"
If you can't run, sign up to volunteer, you are needed. Contact Penny Hinck to let her know if you can volunteer.

Running on your own:
A cautionary tale
by Bill Michalski
I had a horrific accident January 10, this year. I fell on ice while traversing the Atlantic Highlands trail, at that point, I wasn't running, I had just stopped as it was too icy and cold.
It was 17 degrees, and I had no phone, because I left it in my car.
I couldn't get up. I had to drag myself. I actually crawled for three hours until a bicyclist, only one around - and the only one crazy to be out on a cold day other than myself - found me. He helped me get back.
Turns out, I had broken my right hip. Had to have a total hip replacement along with repairs to some damage I incurred to my knees and toes from crawling on the frozen ground..
My doctor advises me not to run, so after 25 years of fun, sweat and tears, with the club from the beginning, I have taken up walking. Through JSRC I've  made great acquaintances and friends, Phil Hinck said he can run after two hip replacements, But I am going to follow my doctor's advice - at least for the time being.
To all my running and walking friends: please make sure you have your phone with you. It could save your life.
As of today, I'm back to doing three miles, four times a week walking. I feel great and volunteer at our club's races.
Fall Cross Country Series
Shore AC XC Series Starts October 3.
