July Happenings - Jersey Shore Running Club
Volume XXIV No. 7
From the Editor

Happy July! We have lots of running news so this is just a quick issue to let you know what's coming up in July. Since we are in the height of running season, we will be sending out these e-blasts more frequently to keep you up to date on club activities.

Speaking of club activities, if you're not running in the Belmar Five this weekend (July 11), there are plenty of opportunities to help be part of the action by volunteering. You can volunteer for packet pick-up (Wednesday & Thursday) at Goodwill Hose Company in Belmar, or volunteer Friday night at the park for the Kids races and other needed activities-and Saturday is race day where course marshals and other volunteers are needed. Volunteer and you can go to the post-race party at Bar A!  Contact our volunteer coordinator,  Race Director, Phil Hinck or Carly DePolo and sign up!

Don't forget to email your race times to  newsletter@jscr.org . Let us know what you're thinking by notifying us at  editor@jsrc.org . If you need to reach a club officer,  just click on their name and it will bring you to an email link for them.
We're looking forward to providing you with a more dynamic and interactive news vehicle.

Dave's Shave Fundraiser

Club Member Dave DeMonico takes it off for Charity

by Bob Both

Dave & Ralph prior to making the cut.
Dave & Ralph prior to making the cut.

The big event in Monmouth County on Monday, June 29, 2015 was not some political fundraiser at a rock star's home but a much more worthy cause fund raiser for Mary's Place located on Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Mary's Place provides a home for women who are dealing with cancer and they provide those services free of charge to its visitors.

The event was covered by numerous news outlets to include Channel 7 Eyewitness News and News 12 New Jersey as well as a multitude of reporters from various new outlets. The event of course featured Ocean Township resident Dave Demonico. Dave is a fixture at local road running events throughout the state. He can be found entertaining runners at many road races playing his trumpet nonstop at key locations of many events frequently for hours at a time.

Dave as many runners recognize him had a long beard which he meticulously was growing for 4 years. The beard was nearly 3 feet long. He felt the time had come to say farewell. He decided to make shaving it off a fund raiser for Mary's Place. The event was scheduled for between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. in front of Mary's Place. At 7 p.m. a crowd of onlookers and media had already gathered to witness the epic event. Mary Ball of Salon Kokopelli of Spring Lake set up her utensils at the steps of Mary's Place. A chair was set out where Dave would sit for the occasion. The television crews were at the ready filming and interviewing the throngs of spectators. At precisely 7:30 p.m. Dave rolled up to the front of Mary's Place in his black Mazda 3 and was greeted with a loud cheer as the television crews rushed over to catch him getting out of his car. Dave got out of his car with his sidekick "Ralph" a recue dog that has been with Dave through the four year beard growing.

Dave made his way over and answered questions from the media. He expressed why he was doing this and the good work that Mary's Place does for the community. Dave then went inside to braid the beard that would be cut off. Dave sat down and Mary Ball was assisted by Dave's Dad and sister in making the first cut. After the fist cut of the braded section Dave held it up for all to see. Mary then proceeded to cut off the rest of the bard and give Dave a clean shave. All the while Ralph was sitting patiently shivering from all the excitement.

The event was a great fundraiser for Mary's Place raising over $4,000. That is more than $1,000 per foot. Dave remarked after the cut that he will start growing another beard so he can do another fundraiser soon.

Several members of the Jersey Shore Running Club were in attendance to show support for Dave. Rob Galizio Vice President of the club summed it up, "Dave did an awesome thing today for an awesome cause".

See if you can recognize him.

Dave has raised over $5000 to date - Donations are still being accepted here
