July 1, 2019: Year 10; Edition 13
Hi, All ~

In exactly 8 weeks, NOVA Open will be moving into the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City ~ and it is going to be simply amazing! Our volunteer team put in herculean efforts to bring you our best lineup of organized play, seminars, previews, special guests, vendors, board games and, by far, the coolest ever Foundation Lounge experiences to date.

Of critical importance over the next few weeks is the gathering of volunteers to help drive the terrain builds home – especially after recent expansions. If three dozen people show up, we can find enough to keep them all busy. Don’t be shy; these events bring you that much closer to the NOVA Open family . . . and we couldn’t do this without you. When you receive an Evite at your email address, please take the time to RSVP. The team goes all out to provide lunches at these events, so knowing how many people will be joining us is very important. If you plan to attend and life intervenes, it would be helpful if you let us know.

I'd like to draw your attention to something very important which I believe is uniquely special at the NOVA Open. I've noticed over the years - that which well and truly stands out – is the way our volunteers and attendees band together to form long-lasting relationships. Is it the Foundation Lounge, the warm way in which we all greet each other, the con amenities which seem to minimize attendees' need to leave to do other things, or the common charitable goal we all share? I don't really know, but I've never quite seen a venue where it is so easy to make lifelong friends out of strangers in just a matter of days.

If it's your first time at the NOVA Open, don't miss out on this element to the con. Take time to visit the Foundation Lounge, check out the huge array of vendors, and introduce yourself freely to anyone who seems interesting or in need of a smile. Our special guests, volunteers, vendors, and attendees love the social experiences at NOVA Open, and are always ready to make a new acquaintance who shares their hobbies and interests. Be sure you return the warm hello when someone else introduces themselves. It might just be me checking in to see if you're having a great time 😉.

FINALLY: THE IMPORTANCE OF FOLLOWING THE NEWSLETTER
I cannot stress this enough. When rules change, events are added, or information on registration and wait lists happen, this is how we share. As we close in on the convention, the newsletter becomes more robust. They will begin to appear overwhelming in size and depth. Help yourself by taking the time to scan through everything – there may be something very important to you below that fold!

Very Best,

Mike Brandt, NOVA Open CEO

They have worked tirelessly to provide you with an amazing slate of offerings to help raise funds for their named charities, and .90 cents of every dollar you spend on tickets will go directly to those charities. NOVA OPEN 40K GT
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE
Is it your first time attending the NOVA Open's legacy Warhammer 40,000 tournament? Let me share a few insights and pro-tips that should help you along:

The Missions
The NOVA Open innovated the Progressive Primary / Selectable Secondary mission format espoused by the ITC, and we continue to revise and refine these missions on an annual basis. In addition to your guidebook package, you'll receive cool Playing Card decks that give you all the information needed to play the missions, select your Secondaries, etc. Nevertheless, make sure you play a few times through the missions prior to attending the event. Since we aren't leveraging our missions over a massive circuit, we tend to be more willing to make tweaks and improvements in an agile fashion. They'll be very familiar if you've only played ITC so far, but not entirely duplicative.

NOVA OPEN 30K TEAM ADDS NARRATIVE SERIES
The Warhammer 30,000 lead team has added brand new narrative events to the NOVA Open 2019 schedule! Limited Space - Sign Up today!

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 10:00pm - 2:00am
Each night is limited to 10 players: 5 Loyalists; 5 Traitors

Join in on a late night 30k Narrative campaign that explores the events of the Black Library's Master of Mankind. Players will be able to participate in one or all of the events and will contribute to the narrative no matter which nights they play.

THE ART OF ACRYLIC POURING
TAUGHT BY KAT JACKSON OF CK STUDIOS
NOVA Open presents Kat Jackson and her “Art of Acrylic Pouring” class – just in time to celebrate its 10th Anniversary! Kat has been a traditional canvas artist for over 20 years.   When this class first came on the scene, Kat had hoped to provide girlfriends and wives with a fun adventure while their significant others were wrapped up in gamer and hobbyist activities – which did happen. As a pleasant surprise, though, the tabletop players and fellow artists joined in as well!

Kat will be teaching two “Art of Acrylic Pouring” classes on Friday, August 30. The am class (9-11) includes a Morning Mimosa to jump start the fun; the pm class (4-6) includes an Afternoon Cosmo for the same effect. Sign up today and go home from NOVA Open with good memories and great artwork:

FOUNDATION LOUNGE / KEG NIGHTS
When you attend NOVA Open, you quickly learn how to press the Penthouse button on the elevators. This little action will deliver you to a full-service bar with panoramic views of DC and the Potomac. More important, it will introduce you to the NOCF's Foundation Lounge where every drink benefits deserving charities!

NOVA Open has always been known as a Family Con, which may have started because Mike enlisted his mom, Laurie, to run it. The moniker is nowhere more apparent, though, than in the penthouse where Mike's aunt, Susan Perkins, manages the Foundation Lounge with his cousins and family friends.

ARTISTS PREP YOUR BRUSHES!
SEVENTH ANNUAL CAPITAL PALETTE COMPETITION
The NOVA Open convention invites hobbyists and artists to proudly display their work in Capital Palette, a juried, open-forum award, miniature art competition. The three Divisions - Apprentice, Journeyman and Masterclass - are each judged by their own 3-judge panel of world-renowned miniature artists (identified below). Those panels will award first place crystal awards across the Division's six Categories. Gold, silver, and bronze accomplishment medals are also awarded in a ceremony on Sunday at 2:00pm in the Foundation Lounge. Read more about the Capital Palette HERE
PREPARE FOR THE 2019 TABLETOP OLYMPICS
The Tabletop Olympics (TTO), which started in 2014, is a free personal achievement and group competition where anyone who attends the NOVA Open can participate. Players accumulate personal "forever achievement points" and can also form groups of 3 to 20 people to compete against other groups. Points can be amassed individually and/or combined with other attendees if individuals band together for group points. In addition to tracking points for teams during NOVA Open 2019, we will also keep track of cumulative points for individuals that accumulate across NOVA Open conventions. Read more about TTO and see the UPDATED scoring chart HERE.
HOBBY HAVEN SPONSORED BY THE ARMY PAINTER
For years, hobbyist and painters have gathered in various places throughout the NOVA Open to paint their models, socialize with fellow hobbyists, and exchange techniques. In 2017, the NOVA Open introduced Hobby Haven, a large, general-use painting area with painting supplies, on the second floor of the Hyatt Regency. The area is intended to form a central, social hub, which provides opportunity for casual interaction and impromptu teaching of painting and artistic techniques.  Read more about Hobby Haven HERE.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS
At the NOVA Open, we believe when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. Therefore, we run the annual Lemonade Raffle - where you can win for losing! In order to be eligible, you must have lost at least one of your tournament games. If you are not playing in a tournament, you are not eligible for the Lemonade Raffle. For every tournament round you lose, your event's Lead will enter your name into our raffle pool. This does not apply to non-tournament pickup games. For example, if you lose one (1) round, you will have one (1) entry in the Lemonade Raffle, if you lose five (5) rounds, you will have five (5) entries in the Lemonade Raffle, and so on. Tournament organizers for your specific game system/s will be responsible for entering your name into the raffle pool. Read more about the Lemonade Raffle HERE.
