Alumni Spotlight
Favorite Teachers
With the retirement of Ms Beth Young, we got to thinking about the teachers who were our favorites as we walked the halls of Troy. Many names come to mind - Jim Zahren, Brother Bill Deanhofer, Dave Lyons, Pam Connolly, George Sprys, and Ray Dilallo to name a few.

So who was your favorite teacher during your time at NC and what made him/her your favorite. Send us the name and story here. We will include them in the summer editions of the newsletter.

Flashback Photo

Last Month's Flashback

There was no flashback photo last month. We did a photo collage honoring retiring teach Ms. Beth Young.

Here's a flashback North Catholic sports item. It was 60 years ago that North's basketball team won their last Pa Catholic League State title. NC Hall of Fame teacher Dave Lyons was a starter on that team.

And it was ten years ago that this photo was taken. Frank Orga and Bishop David Zubik break ground for a new high school in Cranberry.

This Month's Flashback
So here's something you don't see everyday at North. Can you tell us what this is all about. It would also be great if you could help us to identify the people in the picture.

Send your guesses to us here.

Derek Sevcik spent his time during Covid learning how to beat Pac-Man, becoming only the 11th person in the world to successfully beat the game. In order to beat the game, Derek had to eat every ghost, every fruit/prize and do it all without losing a life. The game took roughly 4.5 hours to complete and was streamed live on Twitch in front of family, friends, and four other people who successfully achieved a perfect game.
In recognition of this achievement, a trading card was made in his honor. Additionally, the local ABC affiliate did a story about his perfect game.

Scholarship News
Military Legacy Scholarship
North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date we have raised over $30,000 to fund this annual scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every 4 years (or sooner) it is awarded to an incoming 9th grade student. Molly Burke ('24) is the recipient of the scholarship.

If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Donations can be made by sending checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:

North Catholic High School

The John Latulippe Memorial Scholarship
The John Latuilippe Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Gabriel Grindstaff NC class of 2024. Thank you to all who have donated.

Class of 1959 Scholarship
The following is the Thirteenth Annual Report to the contributors to the North Catholic Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund.

Financial Information

Below is a financial statement of the Fund from inception through December 31, 2021 and for the year ended December 31, 2021 that shows a Fund Balance of $180,015 at year end.  The Fund Balance increased by $30,441 during the year as a result of contributions received from classmates of $12,850, plus investment income and an increase in market value of investments of $27,391, and less scholarships awarded of $9,800.

Since the inception of the Fund thirteen years ago, we have awarded $82,800 in scholarships to ten students.

The Fund Balance is invested in various mutual funds which are held in a separate account at Charles Schwab in the name of and under the control of The North Catholic Foundation.

Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship
The Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship awards for the 2021-2022 school year have been made to Thomas Zizan and Kaitlyn Kenaan. They are children of NC alums Julie Rogalla ('87) and Dan Kenaan ('91) respectively. Each student received $1,000 each to help with tuition. Both students were on the honor roll last semester.

While the Legacy Scholarship continues to grow, we do need the help of our classmates to increase the scholarship fund. If we can get more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing, there is no end to what the money can do to help a student to get the great education that North provided to us and continues to do so today. No contribution is too small. Thanks to BILL GUBANIC for his recent donations. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bob Colbert ([email protected]) or Walt Quinn ([email protected])

Some of our classmates are committing to making a monthly donation via their credit card. It's a painless way to contribute and Bob Colbert and others have been doing so for a while. As Bob said, "it's less that the cost of a bottle of wine." If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.

John Mikulan is also donating 20% of the royalties from his book, The Bark of the Day to the fund.

Class of 1966 Scholarship
The Class of ’66, under the leadership of Tom John Balestreire, is well on its way to funding its goal of $100,000 for the Class of ’66 Scholarship Fund. The Fund will be administered by the Class in conjunction with the school. We, Tom Maier, Jim Beran, Hank Marziale, Paul Ladish, and Bob Gierl have contacted many but if you or someone you know is wishing to be included, contact Tommy, 404.358.4864, text or call.
Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship
Special thanks to all who donated to the Kathy Hickey Monti (’75) scholarship.  More than $20,000 has been raised to help provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life.   A member of the first co-ed class at North, Kathy was a leader among her peers, becoming the first captain of North's first women's basketball team.  Later she was named Assistant Basketball Coach, who along with Coach Don Barth (’51), led the Trojanettes to win multiple state championships. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls. If you'd like to donate, please click here or checks can be sent payable to North Catholic with "Kathy Monti Scholarship Fund" in the Memo and mailed to North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.
NC Class of 1953 Scholarship

Dear 1953 Classmates:

This letter is intended to provide a brief history and status report on the North Catholic Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund (“the Fund”).

The Fund was proposed by Reg Urschler in the Spring of 2021.  An initial meeting was held in early May and, among other things, an ad hoc committee was established comprised of Vince Brogan, Bob Muth, Charley Goetz, and Reg Urschler.  Excellent letters were prepared, describing the Fund and soliciting donations, by Vince and Reg, and first appeared in the June and July editions of the North Catholic Alumni Newsletters.  These letters continue to be mentioned in the Newsletters which also provide links to the original letters.

Total donations to the Fund currently amount to over $27,000.00. The types of donations include:  outright gifts; donations in honor of living classmates; gifts in memory of deceased classmates; and donations suggested in obituaries in lieu of flowers.  The amounts of individual donations have ranged from under $100 to over $11,700.  Most gifts are in the $100 to $500 range.

The ad hoc committee has decided to award its first scholarship this summer to an incoming senior for the 2022 - 23 school year.  The award will be a one-time award of $1,000.  If future awards are of a similar amount, our Fund should provide a legacy that lasts for at least another 25 years.

The ad hoc committee urges all of our classmates to make new or continuing contributions to the Fund.  How fortunate we were to have had the benefit of the education afforded us and what a wonderful opportunity this provides to all of us and the remaining families to "invest" in a "guaranteed return on that investment" by providing a similar opportunity to current students' futures.

Checks should be made payable to the “NC Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund”, and sent to the attention of:

Amber Morrison
North Catholic High School
1617 Route 228
Cranberry Township, Pa 16066

We hope this letter finds you in good health, and reminds you of our wonderful years at North Catholic.

Forever True,

The Ad Hoc Committee

Planned Giving
Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at [email protected].
