JULY 2022

SBC Annual Meeting Highlights – Anaheim, CA June 12-15

  • We celebrated the commissioning of 52 IMB Missionaries and their families. They are being sent all over the world to share the Good News of Jesus, make disciples and plant churches. Many of the missionaries stood behind a screen so that we could only see their silhouettes as they are going to serve in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and other challenging places in the world. Very moving experience to hear them share about Gods call on their lives to go and serve the nations. Over 20% of these newly appointed missionaries were from North Carolina!

  • We heard discussion and reports from the Sexual Abuse Task Force regarding their year-long investigation regarding sexual abuse at all levels of SBC and the resolutions moving forward. We heard about the Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force and the Ministry Check website as well as safeguards and support for victims and protections for reporters or sexual abuse.

  • The messengers overwhelming voted in favor of the reforms presented by the SATF as a starting point moving forward to eliminate sexual abuse in SBC life as well as appropriate steps to establish policies and procedures for dealing with abusers and victims if it does happen.

  • We heard excellent reports on the work of the IMB, North American Mission Board, our six seminaries and the financial blessings of the Cooperative Program. We can do more together.
  • Dr. Daniel Dickard, Pastor of Friendly Ave Baptist in Greensboro, NC was elected as President of the Pastors Conference for 2023.

  • Dr. Bart Barber, long-tenured Pastor of FBC Farmersville, Texas was elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention. My very respected pastor, Travis Tobin of FBC Garner wrote the following about Bart Barber – “I had the pleasure of serving with Bart Barber on the Board of Trustees at Southwestern. I am confident he is a man who loves the Lord and His people. Join me in praying for Bart as he leads us in these important days of openness and transparency.” Christianity Today June 14, 2022 titled an article about Bart Barber as “In Another Win for Abuse Reform, SBC Elects Bart Barber as President ARTICLE

All together the SBC Annual Meeting was a positive experience and many good, right and necessary things were accomplished. Please continue to pray for our Nation, our denomination, our association and our churches to move forward together in our Great Commission purposes in way in which the
Lord will be glorified and pleased.
