On Saturday, July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

“GRIEF & COPING STRATEGIES”
with Lorri Opitz, Quinlan Foundation
Grief is a highly individualized response to loss. It encompasses a wide array of emotions, physical symptoms, and behavioral changes. Understanding the specific types of grief can validate your experience and help you or someone you support navigate the healing process.
The most common types of grief include:
- Anticipatory Grief: Occurs before an expected loss, such as preparing for the impending death of a loved one with a terminal illness, or facing a major life transition.
- Complicated / Prolonged Grief: Intense, long-lasting grief that disrupts daily functioning. It involves a prolonged sense of yearning or emotional pain that does not ease as time passes.
- Disenfranchised Grief: Arises when a loss is not socially recognized, openly acknowledged, or publicly mourned. Examples include the death of a pet, a miscarriage, or the loss of an ex-partner.
- Absent Grief: A lack of outward emotional signs of grief, often because a person is unconsciously suppressing or denying the reality of the loss.
- Cumulative Grief: Occurs when an individual experiences multiple, compounding losses in a short period, which can overwhelm their coping abilities.
- Traumatic Grief: Triggered by a loss that happens under sudden, horrific, or unpredictable circumstances, leaving the person trying to process both the loss and trauma simultaneously.
- Collective Grief: Shared sorrow experienced by a community or society, frequently following a natural disaster, pandemic, or the death of a public figure.
Lorri has been a counselor at the Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement center for over 25 years making her a “seasoned” counselor. She is experienced in working with children, teens, and adults and feels it is a privilege to walk alongside those who are grieving. Lorri strives to empower her clients to find meaning and pleasure in their lives after loss. Throughout her time at the Bereavement Center Lorri has been a guest speaker at churches, hospitals, and schools within the community. Lorri has presented many trainings offered at the bereavement center such as Bereavement Facilitator Training, Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice Volunteer Training, and Healing in the Classroom.
