President’s Musings

Recently, I was attempting to pour honey into a cup of tea when, suddenly, the cup went crashing to the floor. I realized immediately that my hand must have somehow knocked the cup over, and once again I was impressed at how my brain no longer keeps close track of where my extremities are at all times. Yes, it has happened before, and I’ve been lucky that this kind of accident doesn’t always result in a sticky mess on the floor. This type of happening represents the following feature of the aging of our nervous system.

Proprioception is our body’s internal sense of position and movement. It allows us to touch our nose with our eyes closed, walk without constantly looking at our feet, and maintain balance while standing or turning. As we age, this important sense gradually becomes less precise. Several factors contribute to this change. Nerve endings in our muscles, joints, and skin become less sensitive, and signals travel more slowly to and from the brain. Age-related changes in vision, hearing, muscle strength, and reaction time can further reduce our awareness of body position. As a result, older adults may feel less steady, have more difficulty navigating uneven surfaces, or be at greater risk of falls.

Fortunately, proprioception can be improved through practice. Regular exercise, strength training, tai chi, yoga, balance exercises, and simply staying physically active help keep the brain and body connected. Maintaining proprioception is an important part of preserving independence, confidence, and mobility throughout later life.

CLUB PRESIDENT JIM GREENBERG AND BESS CHOSAK, DEATH CAFE CO-FACILiTATORS

The Rossmoor Death Café will meet on July 10, 3:30-5:00 PM in the Vista Room at the Hillside Clubhouse.

Though not a grief support or therapy group, our Death Café offers a safe place for participants to bring up such end-of-life issues as Advanced Healthcare Directives, how to talk about final plans and wishes with your family, and other late life concerns.

Richard read this poem from Mitch Albom's Tuesday's With Morri while relating how "Death ends a life, not a relationship".

The Healing Time

Finally on my way to yes

I bump into

all the places

where I said no

to in my life

all the untended wounds

the red purple scars

those heiroglyphs of pain

carved into my skin, my bones,

those coded messages

that send me down

the wrong street

again and again

where I find them

the old wounds

the old misdirections

and I lift them

one by one

close to my heart

and I say

holy holy.

Film: Strangers In The Park

MONDAY July 20, 1 p.m. at Peacock Hall, Gateway

This gentle dialogue-driven comedy is based on the Broadway play: “I’m Not Rappaport”. The chemistry of Luis Brandoni and Eduardo Blanco, actors who starred in the Broadway play, is on display in this 2026 Argentinian film available on Netflix.

A warm reflection on friendship and aging, the film raises a number of questions about the challenges of maintaining the people, places, and ideas with which we grew up, but are now changing as we age, and approach the end of life. The relationship between a Daughter and her aging Father is particularly engaging.

All Rossmoor residents and their guests are welcome. There will be a short discussion after the film. For more information, contact Bill Patten, Film Chair EOLCC (bpatten56@gmail.com)
