June 1, 2019: Year 10; Edition 11
Hello, All ~

Ninety days until the 10th annual NOVA Open - seriously? It feels like yesterday when we were finishing our first hotel event at Dulles in mid-August 2010 . . . and only a day longer than that when we were finishing our inaugural 40K tournament on picnic tables in 2009. "Time flies" is a real thing!

Bear with me as I ring a familiar bell: Snag tickets now (if you haven't yet) and it is important to put your name on the wait lists. Expect that we could well be populating wait list events this month!

I am happy to report that I joined the #howfarwouldyougo movement. Enjoy the NOVA's regular Monday night gaming crew video as they get a little bit too spiced out on Ghost and Carolina Reaper peppers! We would love to share your videos in the newsletter. Go for it: What cool or crazy thing are you doing to help us celebrate the 10th anniversary? What awesome or epic army or display are you painting?

We've got an important volunteer activity coming up on June 8 - hope to see you there. If you're nearby, come on out and join us. Maybe we'll serve up some super hot peppers - not guaranteed ;)

Best,
Mike Brandt, NOVA Open CEO

2019 NOVA OPEN GHOST PEPPER CHALLENGE

The guys we know and love, valiant volunteers, trying a challenge for charity! In this video our friends are partaking in a Hot Pepper challenge. While they play a spicy game of 40K, they take handfuls of ghost pepper peanuts, Chex mix, and Carolina Reaper jerky. Not your average game night.

The NOVA Open community devotes countless hours of their time throughout the year volunteering to bring the event together, raising awareness and funds for charities such as Doctors Without Borders , Breast Cancer Research , and Fisher House Foundation

We hope to see you and say hello at this year's event. It's our 10 year anniversary! Be sure and thank our volunteers for their hard work.
ALL HANDS STAFF EVENT IN ONE WEEK
This is not a terrain day - it is an SOS from the back end asking for your help. Laurie and her team are looking for organized thinkers, heavy lifters, the mechanically inclined, and volunteers willing to spend one day helping with the little things which make NOVA Open so great!

UPDATE: ALFONSO "BANSHEE" GIRALDES
Alfonso "Banshee" Giraldes has been restricted from air travel and will not be permitted to attend NOVA Open 2019. Join us in wishing him a full recovery which sees him back in the saddle again soon. There is good news regarding seminars: His partner, David "Basilisk" Mommel, who was slated to co-teach with Banshee on this trip in the first place, is still attending. Basilisk will teach the existing seminars - albeit with a few changes which we are very excited about. The 2-day, pre-con, hands-on workshop will now focus on the Tabletop Wargamer!

TO ALL OF YOU
NOVA OPEN:
Tabletop wargamers around the world know that NOVA Open is all about charity as it focuses on funding the efforts of the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation (NOCF). The convention's financial support makes it possible for the Foundation to have donated over $210,000 to charities since 2013.

INTERVIEW WITH AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS AND NOVA OPEN SEMINAR INSTRUCTOR MATT DiPIETRO
Sometimes, a young person’s curiosity can spark a lifetime commitment to art. In the case of Matt DiPietro, owner of Contrast Miniatures and NOVA Open Seminar Instructor and Capital Palette judge, his artistic journey began as a child with a curiosity about the individuals who brought the models to life on the boxes of the tanks and airplanes he built with his father. “When I would build models as a kid, I would always look at the box. I would study the models on the box, and I always thought, ‘who has the job of painting that model? Maybe I can do that someday.’”

SAM LENZ CLASSES AT NOVA OPEN 2019
Top world-class painters, including Sam Lenz (who is teaching 5 seminars and a 3-day workshop at NOVA Open this year) gather at Games Workshop's Warhammer World in the U.K. to work with and explore the new Contrast Paints. Great video, fun and interesting to hear them talk about these paints in person.

REASONS TO VISIT THE ONLINE STORE
This year's NOVA Open offers its largest schedule yet with 279 convention-wide games and events. As we steam into our 10th anniversary convention, we are excited that 93 of those are sold out - but there is wisdom in adding yourself to those wait lists. All that said, there are 186 things that you can still do at NOVA Open 2019!

AVAILABLE:
  • All FFG events are starting to fill; jump in before the wait lists begin.
  • Games Workshop events still have space, including some in Blood Bowl, Underworlds, LotR and the Narrative.
  • Infinity, WM/H, Guild Ball/God Tear, D&D, and Malifaux are all looking for more players.

CHECK OUT: Seminars - New Events - Expansion - More Updates!

FOUNDATION LOUNGE / KEG NIGHTS
When you attend NOVA Open, you quickly learn how to press the Penthouse button on the elevators. This little action will deliver you to a full-service bar with panoramic views of DC and the Potomac. More important, it will introduce you to the NOCF's Foundation Lounge where every drink benefits deserving charities!

NOVA Open has always been known as a Family Con, which may have started because Mike enlisted his mom, Laurie, to run it! The moniker is nowhere more apparent, though, than in the penthouse where Mike's aunt, Susan Perkins, manages the Foundation Lounge with his cousins and family friends.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
This is a great opportunity for high school seniors, college students and graduates to gain the "experience" every job posting requires. NOVA Open has an 8-year history of providing internships to enhance college and job applications. Most of our interns used their experience with NOVA Open and NOCF to land competitive jobs - and a few have gone on to earn awards and acclaim in their fields.

If you have a son or daughter, family member or friend, who may be in need of an internship, send them our way: internships@novaopen.com

ARTISTS PREP YOUR BRUSHES!
SEVENTH ANNUAL CAPITAL PALETTE COMPETITION
The NOVA Open convention invites hobbyists and artists to proudly display their work in Capital Palette, a juried, open-forum award, miniature art competition. The three Divisions - Apprentice, Journeyman and Masterclass - are each judged by their own 3-judge panel of world-renowned miniature artists (identified below). Those panels will award first place crystal awards across the Division's six Categories. Gold, silver, and bronze accomplishment medals are also awarded in a ceremony on Sunday at 2:00pm in the Foundation Lounge. Read more about the Capital Palette HERE
PREPARE FOR THE 2019 TABLETOP OLYMPICS
The Tabletop Olympics (TTO), which started in 2014, is a free personal achievement and group competition where anyone who attends the NOVA Open can participate. Players accumulate personal "forever achievement points" and can also form groups of 3 to 20 people to compete against other groups. Points can be amassed individually and/or combined with other attendees if individuals band together for group points. In addition to tracking points for teams during NOVA Open 2019, we will also keep track of cumulative points for individuals that accumulate across NOVA Open conventions. Read more about TTO HERE.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS
At the NOVA Open, we believe when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. Therefore, we run the annual Lemonade Raffle - where you can win for losing! In order to be eligible, you must have lost at least one of your tournament games. If you are not playing in a tournament, you are not eligible for the Lemonade Raffle. For every tournament round you lose, your event's Lead will enter your name into our raffle pool. This does not apply to non-tournament pickup games. For example, if you lose one (1) round, you will have one (1) entry in the Lemonade Raffle, if you lose five (5) rounds, you will have five (5) entries in the Lemonade Raffle, and so on. Tournament organizers for your specific game system/s will be responsible for entering your name into the raffle pool. Read more about the Lemonade Raffle HERE.
NOVA OPEN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
(NOCF)
NEWS AND UPDATES
The NOVA Open Charitable Foundation has long been on a mission to create a shorthand NOCF that becomes familiar to tabletop wargamers around the world as "their Foundation." We think we've finally got it!

Please join us in thanking Shane Rozzell, a renowned miniature painter and publisher, who donated his daytime job skills to develop and design this new brand. Shane's company, Robot Pigeon Publishing, is responsible for two miniature magazines: Figure Painter and Initiative.

In the coming weeks, we hope to see the full width and breadth of his talent as he and Rick Miller of Steppingstone, LLC, work together to implement their plans for the NOCF website and social media presence.
IN OTHER NEWS:
NOCF will be running only one international online raffle in 2019 - with nearly 40 items currently slated!

Tickets will go on sale July 1 and end September 1 at 12:00pm EST. Winners will be announced at NOVA Open's final awards ceremony that night.

The NOCF will be undergoing a re-brand and updating its website in the coming weeks. Watch for further reveals here.
