1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL (R107)
3.8L FI V8, 4-Speed Automatic Transmission
In 1980, Mercedes-Benz revamped its SL lineup of sporting luxury convertibles with the introduction of the 380SL, a further development of the R107 chassis, which was first used in 1972 by the 350SL. With its heady mix of V-8 power, refined luxury, and sporty underpinnings, it was a very popular model during its run for the U.S. market.
Named for its 3.8-liter V-8, the 380SL received a new four-speed automatic transmission, which further enhanced distance driving. Suspension continued to be the same fully independent setup as in the earlier cars, and four-wheel disc brakes remained standard. The R107 was the first SL to receive a V8, and its smooth and torquey delivery is in keeping with the overall character of the car.
When I was in the automotive supplier industry, I got to go to Germany (beginning in the ‘70s), work with the engineers, see what these were made of, how they were made in Sindelfingen, get to understand the whole Mercedes-Benz character, reputation, and why the cars were just better.
This 380SL is a good one. It has a dark blue exterior with matching removable hard top, a blue soft top, and a tan leather interior. It is equipped with active seat belts, automatic climate control, and a modern stereo head unit with CD player. The A/C system is all there, but not currently cooling. Its service records & receipts date back to June, 2004, with most done by the local dealer (Mercedes-Benz of Ann Arbor). Most brake components, water pump and more were replaced at 112 - 113k miles.
It has just recently received new tires, new spark plugs, a fuel injector and a complete cleaning & polishing. As a result, it looks and runs great. A clean Carfax report is available on request, and a full car cover and windshield sun shade are included.
