JWA October Newsletter 2016
Shana Tovah and Welcome to Pink Month!

October is a busy month for the JWA and this year, it is a specially meaningful one with Rosh Hashannah and the High Holidays upon us. It is a chance to start anew and get involved in many meaningful  and interesting activities.

As many of you know, October is  Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a cause very close to our hearts. The JWA has funded a mobile breast check-up clinic through the  Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation that operates in low income areas of Hong Kong. The mobile unit provides free breast health assessments and counseling for women in need. We have also supported a counseling program at  One in Nine, an Israeli organization dedicated to supporting women diagnosed with breast cancer during and after treatment. We will have several events this month and look forward to seeing everyone there to help us raise funds for our beneficiaries.

We are also gearing up for our Annual JWA Bazaar on November 6th - The Hong Kong Jewish Community's biggest event of the year! If you or anyone you know has new merchandise that can be donated for sale, please contact us by emailing  info@jwa.org.hk

March 19th 2017 is the date for the  JWA's 70th Anniversary Gala! Be sure to mark your calendar now, and join us to celebrate a very special milestone for the JWA.
For those of you who attended and enjoyed our very successful Women's Networking event, An Evening in Our Village, please find the photos here: http://jwa.org.hk/photos/

We trust that you will find something that interests you in our event line up this year, and we plead that you will help us to continue to achieve our goals and keep this historic organization alive through your active involvement. The JWA needs YOU!! The JWA is non-affiliated and we welcome all women who want to make a difference.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you all this month.
We wish you all and your families, a very happy healthy New Year.  Shana Tovah Umetoukah,

Shani and Marissa

HKJFF Special Invitation for JWA Members -Tuesday, November 22nd

Location: The Asia Society HK Center
Time: 11:00 am-12:40 pm

The Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival  is offering a special "movie date with the JWA "  ticket price for all JWA Members. The films will be:
Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict
Rebellious American socialite Peggy Guggenheim is one of the most colourful figures in modern art. She spent a lifetime and a fortune breaking society's rules to become one of the preeminent art collectors of the 20th century and a tireless champion of the avant-garde. This absorbing documentary charts her rise from Jewish heiress to bohemian tastemaker, as she helped discover, support, and promote the early careers of such talents as Dali, Kandinsky, and Pollock. She forged a ground-breaking career as an independent gallery owner and collector while moving through a series of liaisons with brilliant artists including Samuel Beckett, and Max Ernst. This slick documentary is richly illustrated through Guggenheim's art collection, featuring rare interviews her contemporaries and as well as with Guggenheim herself.

Women in Sink
At a small women's hair salon owned by a Christian Arab in Haifa, Israel, Iris Zaki installs a mini film set over the sink, where she chats with the clients she is shampooing. Expecting to hear from Arab women about the difficulties of living as a minority in Israel, Iris was surprised to find a story of friendship and acceptance between Arab and Jewish women, the salon an island of sanity in the complex reality of Israel. Painting an unexpected and nuanced portrait of Israeli society, where women share their differences and a diversity of views on politics, history and love .

Spotlight on a JWA Beneficiary

Beneficiary of the Month - Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation

The  Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation (HKBCF) was set up in March 2005  by Dr. Polly   Cheung  as a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to eliminating the threat of breast cancer to the local community through education, support, research and advocacy. Breast cancer is a growing threat to women in the Hong Kong community, with 1 in 17 women now being diagnosed, with a trend towards younger women being stricken with this disease. Sadly, Jewish women are particularly vulnerable to this illness due to genetic reasons and in Israel the statistic is 1 in 7 women now being diagnosed.
The JWA and the HKBCF have worked together since 2012 strengthening our ties annually.

Ms. Michelle Doo of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation speaking at the JWA's Spring Evening Event 2015

This year the  JWA will continue this partnership by providing ongoing support of a screening and assistance to lower income women who are facing breast cancer. We feel strongly that, as Jewish women, we should support women from the local community though this terrible illness.  For the fourth year running, the   JWA   will provide funding for a nurse to give counselling to women who seek advice about medical concerns relating to breast health. This nurse assesses whether the patient needs further medical checks such as mammograms and/or ultrasound. The patient is then referred for further investigations and treatment if necessary. She also conducts educational sessions on early detection and prevention. The cost of this project is   USD   25,800 ( HKD   200,000) annually. To date, the JWA is proud to have supported more than 5000 women through this program and we continue to seek ways to be of assistance.
