The power of the Holy Spirit “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Power is defined as the ability to act effectively, and the capacity to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. These two definitions accurately describe the power of the Holy Spirit. Because the power of the Holy Spirit is literally the power of God, the ability to act and influence is infinite, unlimited, and eternal. In this way, the power of the Holy Spirit is different from any other kind of power.

The power of the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples of Christ to turn the world upside down with the powerful preaching of the gospel. They could not have accomplished this in their own power. Jesus promised that the Spirit would come, live within them, and empower them in a miraculous way. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" Acts 1:8. The disciples, who had been in hiding from the Romans after the crucifixion, became filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's power was made manifest to a great number of people that day, resulting in the conversion of about 3,000 (Acts 2:41). The day of Pentecost was the beginning of the indwelling power of the Spirit living within those Jesus saves (John 14:17; Acts 2:1-4).

The Holy Spirit still works in the world today, accomplishing God's will through believers. His power leads us, convicts us, teaches us, and equips us to do His work and spread the gospel. He also works in unbelievers who are not able to resist His power to bring about God's plans and purposes.

The Holy Spirit helps us to pray. When you pray with the Holy Spirit’s power, you can pray exactly what needs to be prayed. Has there ever been a time in your life when someone prayed for you, or you prayed for someone else, and everything you prayed aligned with what you or that person was going through? Even more amazing is you never told them Continued on page 2 STAFF 2 Continued from page 1 what to pray for. This happens because of the Holy Spirit’s power to aid in prayer. Sometimes you don’t know what or how to pray. In these moments, you can depend on the Holy Spirit, who will help you.

The best thing about the Holy Spirit is knowing you don’t have to do this yourself. You don’t have to witness, pray, or even live this Christian life with your own strength. You can depend on the Holy Spirit’s power.

“Encourage each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord. Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Ephesians 5:19-20

Last week, I attended our West Ohio Annual Conference in person for the first time in four years. Like so many other things, Covid forced us into conducting the business of the Annual Conference remotely. It was good to be with friends and acquaintances again, many of which I had not seen since June 2019.

As I sat there through the worship and business sessions, the word “reemergence” came to mind. According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, to reemerge means “to emerge again; to come into sight or prominence once more.” I don’t know why that popped into my head, but it was fitting to the moment. The West Ohio Annual Conference had once again come into sight. Old friends from all other West Ohio were able to celebrate gathering together again in one place.

Those 2 and a half days were just another reminder of the many things we lost during Covid, especially the connectivity of our relationships with each other. But now the time for lamenting is past. It is time to celebrate, to move forward, to accept new ideas, and face new challenges with courage and purpose.

One way to do that is to practice these few verses from Ephesians. If you are not already doing these things each day, I hope that you will at least give it a try.

Have a blessed week,

Dave

Tri-County SOUL Ministries continues to receive support through this program at the Meijer’s on Gilmore Road through Saturday, July 1. Shoppers simply ask the cashier to add $10 (or any multiple of 10) to their shopping total and it will be credited to the S.O.U.L. account. Your receipt will be proof of the donation.  Gift cards are then given to S.O.U.L. at the end of the period which can be used to purchase groceries, diapers or wipes at Meijer.

Saturday, June 17 is Double Day. On that day, Meijer will match every donation to make your gift “double.”

There are two ways to support this program:

  1. If you shop at Meijer, tell the cashier to add $10 (or more - in increments of $10) to your bill.
  2. Send a check to JWUMC with SOUL/Simply Give in the memo line. Those donations will be sent to S.O.U.L. and a volunteer will take it to S.O.U.L. on Double Day. If you do that, do it early enough so Marilyn can get a check to S.O.U.L. before June 17.

Any questions, contact Cheryl at [email protected] or 829-0936.

Matthew 25 Volunteer Opportunities

A friendly reminder that our next opportunity to volunteer is:

  • Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

This is open to everyone in the congregation along with friends and family. Our group is generally small and a great way to get to know someone else in the congregation! We always ask for sedentary work, so it won’t be too physically difficult. We will meet in the lobby of Matthew 25 Ministries at 11:00 AM. For your GPS the address is “11060 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242”.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Larissa Waldorf at email: [email protected] (home) or [email protected] (work), or both, or call my cell phone 513-488-9169. M25M likes to know how many people to expect. See you then!
