Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation Continues Community Investments in St. Clair Superior

The Mandel Foundation's Investment in the Community Sailing Center Will Help Create an Environment Where Every Individual Can Thrive

Cleveland, OH (September 9, 2024) – The Cleveland Metroparks has revealed plans for the Community Sailing Center, a world-class community center planned for the E. 55th Street Marina. The first of its kind along Lake Erie in Ohio, the Community Sailing Center will provide unprecedented public access and sailing opportunities to St. Clair Superior and our neighbors in Glenville, Hough and AsiaTown, as well as Greater Cleveland.

Two new facilities will make up the Community Sailing Center, featuring multi-purpose learning spaces, indoor and outdoor community areas, concessions and dining, a roof deck, overlook tower, and a boathouse that will serve as the sailing hub. “This state-of-the-art facility will be a beacon for inclusivity, equity and access along our lakefront, and build on our ongoing collective efforts to serve east side communities, including the CHEERS project, Mandel Community Trail and enhancements to Gordon Park South,” said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian M. Zimmerman.

The Sailing Center will host year-round Sailing STEM programming and hands-on educational experiences for youth, adults and families. In addition to connecting St. Clair Superior, Glenville, Hough and AsiaTown youth more closely to Lake Erie, the Community Sailing Center will also connect to the Mandel Community Trail, which is commencing construction along North Marginal Road from E. 9th to E. 55th streets.

The Mandel Foundation’s investments in the Community Sailing Center, Gordon Park South, the Mandel Community Trail, placemaking efforts and a tree canopy expansion in St. Clair Superior total over $16 million in community-facing investments designed to better connect residents to existing neighborhood assets. “Together, we are breaking down physical, economic and social barriers to enhance the quality of life for our region, particularly in our neighborhoods closest to the lakefront who have been historically disconnected,” said Dr. Jehuda Reinharz, President and CEO of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation.

This project, alongside the other major investments in our neighborhood, will help the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation continue its mission of creating a place where people live, thrive and experience the good things happening in our neighborhood.
