Jackals Open Season With 3-1 Win
Give Dwight Mullins His First ECHL Victory
ELMIRA, N.Y. - October 12, 2012 -  The Elmira Jackals picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Reading Royals in their home opener at First Arena on Friday night. It was the first ECHL win for the Jackals' new head coach Dwight Mullins.

The Jackals brought steady pressure throughout the first period and out-shot the Royals by a 13-7 count. One of the early shots was the biggest difference maker. A slap shot by rookie defenseman Danny New found its way through a screen and, after the initial save by Reading's Philipp Grubbauer, a juicy rebound laid just above the crease. Jackals captain Jean Bourbeau poked it across to Jordan Pietrus who slammed it home for the goal at 5:47. Elmira was faced with a pair of shorthanded situations in the first, but goalie Marc Cheverie and the killers kept Reading's attack at bay. Despite some good looks the Jackals failed to cash in their lone power play of the first.

Reading swung momentum in its favor by drawing a couple of power plays early in the second stanza. While the Jackals did not allow a power play goal, the Royals' persistence paid off with an unassisted goal by Joel Champagne. Working a 2-on-1 with Yannick Tifu, Champagne looked to pass but took a shot that eluded Cheverie's blocker. Reading held an 11-4 shot advantage for the second and the game went to the third tied at one.

Elmira earned just its second power play of the night 4:47 into the third and made it pay dividends. A shot from the point by Chris Wideman was deflected by Dustin Gazley to Artem Demkov on the doorstep and he slammed home his first of the season at 5:20. Just 3:16 later Gazley worked a 2-on-1 with his former college teammate Andrew Rowe and netted the eventual game winner. Gazley's goal was a big one because with seven seconds, and Grubbauer pulled for the extra attacker, Reading's Chris Langkow lifted a shot out of a pile past Cheverie. Despite one last rush, Reading couldn't find the equalizer.

Cheverie stopped 34 shots en route to the win while Elmira was 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
