Making Disciples as a Coach
I don't know about you, but when I hear the word "coaching" some of the images that conjure up in my mind are not good. In fact one of my high school football coaches was coach Martin. Now, for coach Martin, it seemed coaching meant finding something I did wrong, pulling my face mask within an inch of his face and speaking truth into my life at a high volume! To him, this was coaching, but I would contend it was not the best way for me to develop and grow as a player and more importantly as a person.
Today, it seems that coaching is used as a term to describe many things, so I want to define what we mean (and don't mean) when we talk about Coaching:
- Coaching is not consulting - consulting involves diagnosis and recommendations, while coaching is about discovering solutions and encouraging action.
- Coaching is not counseling - counseling has a past orientation, coaching has a future orientation.
- Coaching is not telling - telling is about what I know, coaching is a about asking powerful questions and actively listening.
- Coaching is not supervision - supervision is oriented around the needs of the organization while coaching is centered on the faith journey of the person.
Many in the church are finding coaching in this way to be a powerful tool to help people move people toward God and his will for them. Rather than seeing discipleship as something done in mass, a coaching approach appreciates the individual's strengths, gifts and experiences.
With this in mind, here is another way to define what a coach is that goes back to the original meaning of the word:
Coaching is a vehicle designed to help transport people to their intended destination.
Whether you are a parent, a friend, a Sunday school teacher or a pastor, the people we get to lead and serve are not mass produced items, they are fearfully and wonderful made. Coaching appreciates their unique God-given design and their unique God-given assignment.
We have a unique opportunity to hear from a global thinker and practitioner in the area of coaching on April 14th. Keith Webb will be with us from 9am until 2pm to lead our 2016 EngageJax Coaching Summit. You will want to be a part of this valuable leadership development experience that will give you tools and ideas on increasing your effectiveness as a coach.
