Engaging Minds: Resources for school families

This week's feature is the second of three highlights from our learning from Dr. Michael Thompson’s November 2 visit. Be sure to click on the links for further resources and reading!

The Social Lives of Children

Michael Thompson, NYT best-selling author and child psychologist, facilitated a Q and A to walk students through what he says they already know. In the dialogue, middle-schoolers contributed and ultimately defined friendship and what it means to be popular. Students were able to connect important dots, for example: Having and being a friend is the truest measure of social success, not popularity.

For Teachers and Parents: A middle-schooler's strong desire to be popular tends to wane as he/she gets older, especially in later high school years. By early high school, kids are finding their friendships and friend groups to be more settled and satisfying. For more reading on the subject, click here.

Exploring Interests in Middle School Exploratory Classes

The current session of the middle school exploratory classes has their final class this week and has offered students an engaging variety of interests to explore! Fifth grade's exploratory focused on the class' Super Mario tree for the Festival of Trees. Students in grades sixth through eighth had the choice between Christmas Crafts, Yearbook, preparation for the RVO Christmas party, and a Google Design class.

Pictured here: Yearbook students have selected the yearbook cover for the 2024 yearbook and are beginning their page design, and Christmas Crafts students held a craft show after chapel on Thursday featuring their unique creations!
