Green Spotlight with Katherine Elkins, Sustainability Coordinator Intern

Katherine shares:

Hello everybody! This week, I wanted to highlight an upcoming holiday: World Wetlands Day!

When thinking of wetlands, places like the Everglades may come to mind first, but there are plenty of wetlands here in Salisbury, including in Catawba College's ecological preserve. This Monday, February 2nd, World Wetlands Day celebrates these unique and essential ecosystems, which absorb floodwaters, store carbon, filter pollutants, and provide habitat for a vast array of plants and animals.

Unfortunately, we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests, with a 90% decline since the 1700s, which is why World Wetlands Day was created to raise awareness on this issue. So, if you have ever enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, birding, or anything else in the wetlands, take some time to appreciate them this Monday. You could learn more about them online, or even plan a visit to some local wetlands or even the Everglades when warmer weather arrives!
