Seventh Grade Harlem Renaissance Study

Seventh grade students continue their study of American history and the interconnection of artistic movements through an investigation of the Roaring Twenties and the Harlem Renaissance. The significance of this part of the American story is being highlighted and celebrated through poetry readings, analysis of historical documents, and artistic appreciation opportunities.

Students visited the Belk Theater in Charlotte for a performance by the Dance Theater of Harlem in connection with Salisbury Academy’s fidelity to experiential learning. The Dance Theater of Harlem was established during the Civil Rights Movement by Arthur Mitchell, the nation’s first Black principal dancer in the New York City Ballet. Mr. Mitchell was inspired by the Movement and the immense talent in Harlem to create a dance company that celebrated dancers from their community.

Looking ahead, the seventh graders will engage in discussion and reflection to make connections between the Dance Theater of Harlem and other artistic movements and periods of history they have studied, including current events. Experiences such as these create opportunities for learning and growth not just in the areas of social studies and language arts, but in empathy and cultural appreciation for our own community and beyond.
