Green Spotlight with Katherine Elkins, Sustainability Coordinator Intern

Katherine shares:

Hello everybody! It's Valentine's Day weekend, so I wanted to share a few ways we can show love to Mother Earth. Here are some options to continue celebrating this holiday - and other holidays to come throughout the year - while keeping sustainability in mind:

  • Shopping locally: Buying gifts and goodies from local business owners rather than massive chains not only supports your neighbors and the local economy, but it greatly reduces carbon footprint as well!
  • DIY cards and gifts: Reduce waste and save money by creating your own cards and gifts to give to your loved ones. Hand-made gifts and heartfelt notes have a special charm, and you can use what you already own to make them! You could also consider sending digital cards to limit waste as well.
  • Reusable gifts: If buying gifts, get something durable and reusable. Not only does it keep from having to repurchase items, but it reduces waste as well!
  • Potted plants over flowers: As beautiful as a bouquet of flowers is, consider gifting a potted plant to a loved one with a green thumb! They require less carbon emissions and cause less waste, and they can last for years rather than wilting in days.

Of course, there is no dire need to stray from tradition. However, if you would like to show some love back to the Earth, consider making any of these small changes!
