Katherine shares:
Hello everyone!
In this week's newsletter, I wanted to bring up National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW). You are likely familiar with several common invasive species in our area, such as Kudzu, Feral Swine, and the Emerald Ash Borer, which are widespread and very damaging to our region's natural habitats.
From February 23-27, the purpose of NISAW is to inform the public, policymakers, and organizations on the threats invasive species pose and how to prevent their spread. As these invasive species are of little benefit to us, consider taking some simple actions to help prevent their spread!
Some ways you can help prevent the spread of harmful plants and animals include cleaning off hiking boots, bikes, and boats after use; opting for local and native plants when gardening and landscaping; volunteering for removal events; or reporting sightings of invasive species on apps such as iNaturalist!
All of these acts may seem small, but they can make a massive impact, especially when done by large groups. So, consider taking some action against harmful invasive species in the coming days, and have a great week!
