Opportunity Scholarship: Applications due March 1

Helpful FAQ on the Opportunity Scholarship

Below are several helpful Opportunity Scholarship FAQ's for families applying or planning to apply:

Am I guaranteed a reward?

No, new applicants are not guaranteed an award from the NCSEAA Opportunity Scholarship. Awards will be selected as a lottery process with awards given to families in the Tier 1 income level first. As remaining funds are available, the lottery selection process will move to the Tier 2 applicants. Based on early interest from families all over North Carolina, the NCSEAA anticipates that there will be a limited amount of funding available for Tiers 3 and 4. Submitting your application by March 1 does increase your chances to be selected.

Why is it important for me to apply for the Opportunity Scholarship, even if I don’t receive a reward?

We encourage all of our families to apply, regardless of household income level. This will show North Carolina legislature that there is a high demand for school choice in our state and will hopefully guide future funding allocations for this program.

When will I find out if I will receive a reward?

NCSEAA anticipates that award notifications will begin in early April 2024. Please check your emails carefully and log into your NCSEAA parent portal to check the status of your application.

What happens if I do not report my income on the application?

Applicants who do not provide income data will automatically be designated as a Tier 4 applicant, and your chances of receiving an award may be impacted.

Applications Due March 1

The deadline for priority applications for the Opportunity Scholarship is this week on Friday, March 1! Apply by creating an account in the NCSEAA's portal.

Read Across America Week

Let’s get excited about reading!

Each year, readers all across our country celebrate the joys of reading on National Read Across America Day which will take place on Saturday, March 2. We would like to recognize this day by inviting students to come to school dressed as their favorite book character on Monday, March 4

We would also like to celebrate reading throughout the entire school week of March 4-8 with a schoolwide read-a-thon. Each student is encouraged to read independently or with a parent for at least 15 minutes each day and record their reading time on the chart providedOnce all slots are filled, students may turn their reading log into the library to receive a special Dr. Seuss bookmark. Happy reading, Jaguars!

Happening-Now Highlights from the SA Upper School

In this week's Jag Weekly learning spotlight, let's take a peek into several of the Upper School students' current topics and learning experiences!

Environmental Science: As part of their study of environmental science and the layering of topics in science and sustainability, SA Upper School students visited Main Street Market this week to learn about sustainable practices in agriculture (pictured above). Up next, students will work with a soil scientist and then visit an agricultural research campus to apply their learning.

Music: SA Upper School students are learning a new instrument as they play handbells (see picture below) and revisit how to read sheet music in preparation for a live performance at the next SA Downtown Exhibition Night.

10th Grade Compass: After reading The Tipping Point, 10th grade students each took on a cause for which they will try to start a movement. Students will be delivering TED talks in their mini TEDed to generate support for their causes.

Rhetoric: Students just finished Lord of the Flies as they looked at the role of social organizations, power, and human nature. This study and discussion aligned with the review of court cases in their civics class, research that included a trip to the courthouse to observe the justice system in action.
