Green Spotlight with Katherine Elkins, Sustainability Coordinator Intern

Katherine shares:

Hello everybody! I hope you've been staying warm and cozy. This week, I wanted to share a quick, simple craft with you all - pinecone bird feeders! All you need for this activity is:

  • An open pinecone
  • Some twine or string
  • Peanut butter
  • Bird seed

To create your bird feeder, start by tying your string in a loop to the top of your pinecone. Simply spread some peanut butter onto your pinecone (Crisco, lard, or sunflower butter work for those with nut allergies, too!). Then, roll the coated pinecone it in your bird seed. Finally, hang your bird feeder up on a branch or hook outside somewhere visible from a window, and watch as different birds come to feed from it! Birds are active all year round, and 96 million people in the United States enjoy bird watching every year. If you happen to be one of those people, or are interested in joining in on the fun, consider this easy craft! I hope you all enjoy!
