What Are Your Kiddos Doing After School Tomorrow?
Winter days are short, so why not encourage outdoor, active play right after school?
You can make outside play (even if it’s only for an hour) your child’s "Plan A" every day:
- Set up a quick play date for your child with a friend from school or in your neighborhood.
- Keep engaging outdoor toys and games close at hand so your child has a reason to head out the door.
- Provide layered clothing so that getting too chilly isn’t a problem. Scandinavians like to say, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.”
When winter throws a curveball, like last Tuesday, "Plan B" is essential. (Just ask any teacher):
- Jenga
- Legos
- Cooking with a parent
- Drawing or painting
- Building a fort with blankets
Without a good plan (or two!) it’s easy to default to screen time; especially on brisk, winter days. In her book, 1000 Hours Outside, Ginny Yurich recommends helping our children stay connected to nature through extended time outside, even in the winter. Find tips on Instagram. @1000hoursoutside
