Green Spotlight with Katherine Elkins, Sustainability Coordinator Intern

Katherine shares:

Sustainable Craft: Sock Snowmen!

Hello, families! As we're facing some very wintry weather this weekend, I'm sharing a climate-related craft with you all. One thing I love about this craft is that you or your little ones could create it using things you likely already have around the house! This can reduce clutter and waste, as you use materials that are already available to you, allowing for a fun yet sustainable activity.

To make this craft, you will need:

  • 1 long sock (preferably white, but other colors and patterns work too!)
  • Rice, or any other available filling you'd prefer
  • Thread or string
  • Anything to decorate to your liking (This could be beads, buttons, or pompoms for a face, spare fabric for a scarf, or just a marker - anything you have available works!)

1. Fill bottom of sock with rice (about halfway). Tie off.

2. Add more rice for the head. Shape and tie off again.

3. Make a hat: fold the top down or use another sock!

4. Decorate with markers or craft supplies—get creative!

Bonus Tip: Use microwave-safe materials and it doubles as a heating pad!

That's it for this week's Green Spotlight! I hope you can enjoy this activity, and stay warm this weekend!
