As part of their current study of World War Two, eighth grade students recently had the opportunity to visit with England native Penny Roemer, who has lived in Salisbury since the 1960s. Ms. Roemer grew up in England and shared her experience living there as a child during the War. In preparation for her visit, students studied the role of Britain during the War and the impact on her citizens. Ms. Roemer was a delight, sharing stories of family members who fought in the war, receiving ration coupons for candy from her grandmother, and the ways Londoners navigated blackouts imposed during German air attacks in 1940 and 1941.
Eighth grade student Lucas Webb shares that, “Her stories were so detailed, I could almost see them in my mind.”
The impact of war on everyday people was a focus for students during this unit. Ms. Roemer’s personal accounts and memories were a perfect match to the students’ studies.
Georgia Heilig reflected, “Her point of view really changed how I see other people’s role in war.”
