Creatively solving problems as we learn! Eighth grade students just completed and presented on two problem-based learning (PBL) projects in which they worked in groups to solve open-ended problems. First up, students designed sustainable communities complete with renewable energy sources and a full model of an eco-house. They then pitched their plans to their peers in a town hall meeting! As the second piece of the PBL project, students designed a model of a roller coaster for Carowinds while incorporating specific components. Students tested their models and found the work, power, speed, and kinetic and potential energy of their coasters.

One Full Year, Measured in Love
|
Mrs. Fowler Shares:
It’s been one year…This was the week that we gathered last year to walk through potential school closings and discussed remote learning and being prepared to not return after spring break. We spent two weeks designing schedules, updating technology platforms, and planning for the unknown. I will never forget feeling so anxious and nervous to share those scenarios but also so proud of how our team responded with their willing attitudes and growth mindsets to face what we were going to do in order to continue to meet the needs of our students and families. That determination and innovation has continued to uplift every aspect of how we have navigated this year together.
And while so much has changed during these five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes, I hope we can pause and reflect on the ways we have measured this year together.
Below, I’m sharing words with you from a blog that I follow. I hope that we can reflect on what we have experienced together over this past year and celebrate the gift of this time and how we've each found new ways to live and, most importantly, show love and kindness.
How do you measure a year in a pandemic?
In closeness
In distance,
In sorrow,
In terror.
In family dinners (100 eaten together-a record number),
In sourdough starters,
In puzzles,
In TV series,
In drive-by birthdays.
In empty arms and aching loneliness,
In frustrated tears,
In shattered dreams,
In missed milestones.
In heavy decisions,
In masks, and social distancing,
In long walks,
In endless conversations,
In mind-numbing exhaustion,
In Zoom working and learning.
In overwhelmed hospitals,
In bell-ringing and pot-clanging for heroic healthcare workers,
In vaccines,
In treatments,
In hope.
But, always and most especially…in love
In love,
In connection,
In friendship,
In humanity.
In the small kindnesses from strangers that buoyed us.
In the renewed friendships with those long lost to us in the regular busyness of ordinary life.
In the love that meant so much more this year when everything else was stripped away.
That’s how I will measure this year, the only way I can, the only way that makes any sense…in love.

Spring Break Health and Safety Reminders
|
|
SA Parents,
We continue to follow the recommendations of the CDC who recommends a mass transit travel quarantine to give adequate time for contact tracing or symptom monitoring. Students who have traveled via mass transit will quarantine and not be present on campus for a minimum of 5 days after completion of travel.
We ask that our families inform the school at nurse@salisburyacademy.org if you plan to utilize mass transit (plane, bus, train) over the break to give our teachers adequate time to have the virtual learning plan ready for your student.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community safe and open for learning.
