COVID-19 Response at SA: Transparency and Confidentiality in Communication
Dear SA Families:
As media outlets begin to share information on positive COVID-19 tests as they are tracked by our local health department, I wanted to share a reminder with you about the transparency, confidentiality, and supportiveness of our school communication approach, specifically as it relates to COVID-19. You may be aware of news shared this week of other area schools with positive cases of COVID-19. With your partnership in open communication, it is our goal that the members of our school community hear any information of this nature affecting Salisbury Academy from us first, as opposed to from news and other media channels.
Please know that in the event that your child, you, or another family member tests positive, your situation will be held in full confidence. In this situation we greatly appreciate you informing Salisbury Academy quickly of the positive case so that we can take action in the interest of the safety of our community. As a school, and with the guidance of our Medical Task Force and local health department, we will then make a timely turnaround to inform our school community of the positive case(s) and share what this means for each parent and student in our school community.
Contacting myself (bfowler@salisburyacademy.org) or SA’s Independent RN Consultant Nurse Turner (call the front office at 704-636-3002 to reach her) is the best way to share updates on your family’s health as well as to confirm the accuracy of any information regarding our school community. Note: We greatly appreciate you keeping us informed when your child will be absent. Please notify your classroom teacher or Mrs. Peoples by 9 a.m. or earlier if possible on any day that your child is out.
We pledge this confidentiality and transparency to you. Though our high levels of hygiene, masking, sanitation, and social distancing make a significant contribution to the health of our students, teachers, and staff, we understand that a member of our school community could be impacted by the virus at any point. We are in this together and support you fully as you keep your family healthy and empower your children to have a full educational experience.
*Note: See below for updates on face coverings as well as an outline of next steps in the event of a confirmed COVID-19 case on campus.
In partnership,
Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Meeting Nurse Turner: Students learn more about health and safety in our current environment
|
|
|
SA's students have done super work following new safety protocols at SA including hand washing, social distancing, and wearing face coverings. In her visits to classrooms Nurse Turner is helping students better understand why these safety measures are in place and sharing ways that students can keep themselves and others healthy.
After introducing herself and letting students get to know her, Nurse Turner is showing students the PPE equipment that she will be wearing when she sees students in the COVID Care Center.
"I want to be sure that the students feel comfortable coming to see me and aren't fearful of me or overwhelmed with fears of the virus," Nurse Turner shares.
|
|
As part of her sharing she discusses and demonstrates proper mask wearing and hand washing and encourages students to eat well and get a full night of sleep in order to stay healthy.
Nurse Turner's presentation places special emphasis on social distancing and how to put fears of the virus into perspective. In the social distancing demonstration, she uses a water bottle to simulate the droplets that people expel when talking, breathing, or laughing. The students welcomed this as an understandable way to visualize the need for proper spacing. Thank you, Nurse Turner, for helping keep us all safe and for getting us off to a strong start this school year!

Health and Safety Updates
|
|
|
The CDC has recommended face coverings with two or more layers. As your child is able, please encourage them to wear this type of mask. The CDC has also advised that face coverings with vents provide a reduced level of protection. For this reason we ask that you please not send your child to school with a vented mask.

COVID-19 Response Plan for Positive Cases
|
Each confirmed case of COVID-19 within the Salisbury Academy community will be evaluated individually taking all factors into consideration as we make decisions about on-campus vs. distance learning for individual cohorts or the school as a whole. In all scenarios, the SA community will be informed and kept up-to-date of the positive case(s) and what it means for each student and family. Generally, the following will be our guidelines for decision making:
|
|
1 Confirmed Case: Next action steps will be disinfection at a deep level and monitoring for further symptoms/cases before any definitive steps to transition a cohort to distance learning are taken.
2-3 Confirmed Cases: A class or cohort will likely switch to distance learning for a 14-day period.
5 Confirmed Cases: 5 cases will qualify as a cluster. In this event, SA will work with our Medical Task Force and health department to determine the need for transitioning to distance learning based on location of cases and degree of community spread/transmission.
View the Reopening School page for the latest updates. Any new information will be placed at the top of this page each week.

As we work through the streaming options for virtual chapel and also consider sharing chapel as a video link, we will test our first virtual chapel gathering by having students, faculty, and staff participate. The chapel will be recorded and shared with our SA families in next Sunday's Jag Weekly. Stay tuned!

Happy Birthday!
Each Thursday at chapel we recognize the birthdays for the coming week. In this first chapel of the year, SA would like to recognize our summer birthdays as well as those birthdays in the coming week, through September 2:
