This Week's Health Updates: Celebrating our first 14 days together
Dear Parents,
As part of our ongoing commitment to school health and safety, the Medical Task Force continues to modify the COVID-19 Handbook with the input of our local health department and in partnership with the Novant infectious disease department. We celebrate our first 14 days together with in-person instruction and greatly appreciate your partnership in reaching this milestone.
Thank you for your transparent communication and open conversations this week as we have worked through various health scenarios with absences. Your partnership is the key to the reopening of school. While we understand the frustration of managing the new health and safety procedures as a family, we also know that following these guidelines strictly is the best way to keep the school open for students in the building.
A few important updates to the SA COVID-19 Handbook are noted below along with a new algorithm chart that will provide some clarification on low- and high
-risk symptoms and the process to follow. We ask that each of our families read the following updates to our handbook:
-
Return to school decision algorithm chart- page 4
-
Updated language to COVID exposure- page 4
-
Addition of COVID-like symptoms and sibling impact- page 6
As we continue to work to mitigate the risks of exposure and spread, our birthday policy this year will reflect a change in that invitations will not be sent home by the school. Our in-school efforts of social distancing, wearing masks, and hygiene are critical to keeping our students in the building at this time.
On a personal note, I want to say thank you to the amazing parents who have surprised us with words of encouragement, signs, and sidewalk chalk. It truly lifted the spirits of my team and filled their buckets with appreciation and support. Thank you for your kindness! The partnership and support of our parents have never been more important.
With gratitude,
Beverly Fowler, Head of School
The State of North Carolina has provided SA with a 5-pack of masks for each K-8 student. These will be distributed this week. Please write your child's name or initials on their masks so they can tell which masks are theirs.

Sixth Grade Students Design Experiments and Review the Scientific Method
|
|
|
Mrs. Starrett, 5th and 6th Grade Math and Science Teacher, shares:
Every great experiment begins with a question, and sixth-graders have put their scientific minds in gear to design experiments based on their own curiosities and questions.
After forming questions, students formed if/then hypotheses, planned out procedures, and worked in groups to perform their experiments in class. Each group then discussed if their hypothesis was supported or refuted in their analysis and conclusion. Topics explored included: The Rubber Egg, Oobleck, Buoyancy in Flat Soda v. Fresh Soda, Gummy Bears in Vinegar v. Salt, The Stretchiest Slime, and Soda Rockets.
