Fifth and Sixth Grade's Study of Space is Out of This World
|
Fifth and sixth grades are both immersed in space! In science class, fifth grade is focusing on the eight planets and sixth grade is learning about gravity, stars, and galaxies. Sixth-graders are in the middle of researching about Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, how gravity keeps the planets in orbit, different kinds of stars (giants, pulsar, dwarf), black holes, supernovas, constellations, what defines a galaxy, and what the characteristics are of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Additionally, fifth grade shared their planetary presentations with fourth-graders via Zoom this week!
Fifth and sixth grade science teacher Mrs. Starrett shares that it is an exciting added bonus that Perseverance landed on Mars while the classes are studying space. Both fifth and sixth grades spent an entire class discussing Perseverance and studying news clips of it.
"One fifth-grader said she got choked up watching the NASA team cheer when it landed, because it must have been so rewarding after they worked on it for so long. It took nine months to get there! We have two fifth-graders who say they want to be astronauts," said Mrs. Starrett.
A Visit from Mr. Neil the Space Nerd
Self-proclaimed "Space Nerd" Neil Pifer of Horizons Unlimited led fifth and sixth grades on a field trip around campus that was out of this world! Students ordered the planets from the sun, did about a mile walk around campus to make a true model of how far apart the planets really are, and used items like a sesame seed, a peppercorn, a marble, a ping pong ball, and a whiffle ball to show an accurate size comparison of each planet. For the sun, they used a beach ball!

Spring Break Health and Safety Reminders
|
|
SA Parents,
We continue to follow the recommendations of the CDC who recommends a mass transit travel quarantine to give adequate time for contact tracing or symptom monitoring. Students who have traveled via mass transit will quarantine and not be present on campus for a minimum of 5 days after completion of travel.
We ask that our families inform the school at [email protected] if you plan to utilize mass transit (plane, bus, train) over the break to give our teachers adequate time to have the virtual learning plan ready for your student.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community safe and open for learning.

JK/K Collaborative Art Piece Celebrates the Colors of Us
JK and K students and their teachers are celebrating how we are all unique and beautiful! The classes are expressing this through a collaborative art piece. JK teacher Mrs. Jordan shares:
"Wouldn’t it be terrible? Wouldn’t it be sad? If just one single color was all that we had?" These are the words that have been added to the JK and Kindergarten collaborative art piece.
We want our students to leave us knowing how to read, write, and add. But how much more important is it that they leave us knowing that all people are worthy of love, respect, safety and opportunity? Throughout the year we use literature and special activities to help our young learners explore and embrace differences both in and out of the classroom. We teach empathy and learn that our differences make us unique.
As we looked around our classroom, we thought that many of us looked the same, but after taking a closer look we realized that none of us have the same color of skin. After reading The Color Of Us by Karen Katz, we each mixed paint until we found the just right match to our own skin color. Some of us needed a little pink, some gold, some brown. We realized that none of us are black or white. Instead, we are all beautiful shades of color. The color of honey, cocoa, cinnamon, almonds, peaches and cream, coffee, sand and so much more!
We each used our own special paint color to make a handprint. These handprints have come together to make a beautiful piece of art!
