"At Salisbury Academy, there is a genuine love of learning that captures the curiosity of the children on another level. Real life learning experiences, STEM learning, technology, the arts, and enrichment programs make learning fun and exciting. Core virtues, community service opportunities, and faith experiences develop a well-rounded child. Teachers do not just love to teach, they
love
the children as individuals, and their greatest desire is to see their students reach their full potential. Our girl has grown tremendously, personally and academically, since we have become part of SA."

Dreaming Big for Salisbury and Designing Sustainably
|
Fifth and sixth grade students toured Salisbury this week seeking places in which they could design their own community spaces as part of this week's middle school Inquiry and Design Interim. After touring the Rowan Helping Ministries facility and learning about its many sustainable construction elements, students heard from architect and manager for the RHM project Pete Bogle on how to incorporate sustainable construction into their own community space designs.
|
|
Bogle gave students ideas of how make their projects - ranging from restaurants, to golf simulations, to playgrounds, and more - environmentally friendly and shared the three key steps to sustainable construction:
- Energy Efficiency: know where the sun is and use energy resourcefully
- Construction Methods: use building methods that insulate the building and conserve energy
- Material Selection: Choose materials that are healthy (low or no VOC's), are rapidly renewable, and have low embodied energy (the amount of energy it takes to harvest/make/transport the materials)
Bogle shared that the most environmentally-friendly type of construction is renovation and the utilization of existing spaces. As a final point, Bogle urged us to use less materials, waste less, and recycle more!

Tips for Sustainability in the Home: 2020 Resolutions
|
Sustainability in the home is not an all-or-nothing endeavor and looks different for every family. That said, it sure feels good when we can make a change and incorporate a new routine that reduces the footprint of our household! A few ideas of how to expand upon some of your family's current sustainability efforts:
|
|
- Reduce your single-use plastics usage: refillable vessels, reusable shopping bags, reusable baggies, and glass storage containers are among the products that make it possible to reduce or omit single-use plastics in our lives. Where else do single-use plastics tie into your daily routine? See if there are alternatives!
- Fun challenge: Pack a no-waste lunch for your family as many days as possible each week.
- Cut down on paper consumption by using cloth dish towels, napkins, and rags when possible and by printing fewer documents.
- Bring down the energy bill by addressing drafty areas of the house, powering down electronics when not in use, and turning out lights when you're not in a room.
- Bike or walk when the option presents.
- Recycle, re-purpose, and reuse whenever possible. Turn trash to treasures!
- Plant a garden and eat locally-sourced food when possible.
