Jag Weekly
Week of March 29, 2020

Dear SA Families,
As we look ahead to our first full week of remote learning, I know we are all still processing how much has changed in such a short amount of time. Like you, I am figuring out new routines and schedules and finding ways to balance working, supporting two students in my home, and maintaining space for personal health in all of this.
While so much has changed, I am most proud of the thing that hasn’t changed in this transition: our faculty’s commitment to our students and providing a student-centered experience for distance learning. What a privilege it was for me to listen, plan, and collaborate together with each team as they worked to move from a bricks and mortar model to one that meets the demands of our current situation. With every decision, scheduling model, or evaluation of new tool, the question was always, “How will this benefit our students’ learning experience?”
I am so proud and appreciative of our team and wanted you to know that your children are being thought of and considered as part of this process. With this new platform for learning, be patient with yourself, stay connected to your teachers, and take time to care for your personal wellness in all of this.
Missing all,
Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Problem Solving Creatively in Discovery Center Robotics
|
Lower School Division Director Mrs. Anderson shares:
During the month of March, students in kindergarten through fourth grade learned how to code and program Edison robots and Ozobots. Each class worked on a specific project and presented it to their peers:
Kindergarten
learned how to program the Edison robots and made them drive by clapping their hands and using flashlights.
First-graders
created a map of Salisbury and programmed the Ozobots to go from their house to Salisbury Academy.
Westward Ho! Second graders
survived the hardships of the Oregon Trail and programmed their Ozobots to head west from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City.
It’s all about dancing in third grade! Third-graders
used Ed Blocks and created a dance routine and costumes for their Edison robots.
Fourth-graders
learned what it took to clear the roads after a bad snowstorm. Ozobots and Edison robots became snowplows and students had to program their robot to clear as much snow off of the roadmap as possible.
Students had a fantastic time during this unit. It was fun to see their creativity, reflection, and imagination come to life!

Remote Learning Tips: Setting Up a Student Workspace
The quick transition to remote learning means that many of us are setting up work areas in our homes. While being creative is likely part of the process, try to remember these tips for optimal productivity.
- Choose a space that presents a limited number of distractions and remove elements that could impeded the work process (young siblings, cell phones, television, etc).
- Be sure that a flat surface such as a table or desk is part of the space. Working in bed or on the couch will not work long-term.
- Students should be under the supervision of a parent or adult when working online.
- Keep the space well-supplied with necessary materials- pens, pencils, highlighter, etc.
- Encourage students to continue to utilize their agendas. Google Classroom is a good tool for organizing the tasks in each class, but the students’ agendas will enable them to look at the big picture of what they need to do and help them manage their time.

SA Talent Show April 16: Submit your entries!
|
|
|
The SA Talent Show is on for this year and will take place in digital format! We've moved the show back one week from its original date in order to give students more time to submit their acts. As a fun new change this year we will open the show up to our JK and K students as well, and so all students in grades JK-8 are encouraged to take part.
Students are limited to
one act each and will submit a
1-minute video clip of their act.
A tip
:
Film your child's video in landscape format (with the smart phone on its side) so that your video fills up the entire screen when presented on a phone, computer, or TV.
All of the acts will be shared via video on SA social media on Thursday, April 16 as well as in Jag Weekly on Sunday, April 19.
1-minute video submissions may be submitted to
Mrs. Roy
. Please also contact her with questions. With the video clip, please include a description: student's name, grade, talent (ex: karate, dance, singing), and name of musical piece/artist if applicable.
