Getting to the Heart of the Lesson in Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students learned about dissection tools, terminology, and techniques and dissected a pickle and a sheep heart in an activity with Horizons this week.
Fourth Grade Teacher Ms. Brooke Smith shares:
It has been an exciting several weeks in fourth grade! Fourth grade students have been deeply engrossed in the study of the circulatory system. Students learned about the direction of blood flow through the heart, identified parts of the heart, and memorized crucial vocabulary to enhance their learning for their own individual Heart Projects.
Since the beginning of this unit, students have been hard at work on their Heart Projects, a culminating project demonstrating the pathway of blood through the heart. For the project, students chose from a number of mediums: a story, slideshow, 3-D model, poster board, and more! It has been amazing to see each and every student bring the circulatory system to life and get so excited to show their friends and teachers what they have created.
To further deepen our understanding, we welcomed dentist Dr. Brandon Aron as he discussed with the class how our gums and teeth are connected to heart disease and our circulatory system.
We also had a dissection party! Horizons Unlimited visited as students learned how to dissect a few different objects. Students first started out with an autopsy of a pickle to help them understand what “dissecting” really means, as well as to learn how to use the dissecting tools. Then, for the main event, students had the opportunity to dissect a sheep heart and be hands-on with a 4-chamber heart.

Why We Give: The Schupp-Yost family shares
"I support the Salisbury Academy Annual Fund because I am so deeply thankful for this school. My children are genuinely happy at Salisbury Academy and are empowered to reach their potential. Like most mothers, I cannot function when I am concerned about my children. I know each day when I drop them off, they are loved, nurtured, and given the tools they need to be successful adults. Therein, I can attain my full potential because I have total peace about where they are and what they are doing. Giving to the Annual Fund is a small way that I thank the school for my peace."
