Expressing Gratitude to our Veterans
Each month at Salisbury Academy brings with it a different core virtue for us to study and delve into as a school community, and November's monthly virtue of gratitude couldn't be more fitting. November has brought with it a gratitude chapel for our outdoor space and the people who brought it to life, and November is a time where we give thanks for our relationships with our families and celebrate our students' growth at parent-teacher conferences. Adding yet another dimension to our season of gratitude, on Thursday of this week our school community had the opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who serve and have served our country at our annual Veterans Day Chapel.

After a presentation of the colors by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and an inspiring message by Lieutenant Colonel Greg Skelly on the history and significance of Veterans Day, our students, faculty, staff, and parents had the opportunity to shake the hands of and personally thank each veteran present at the chapel. Students gave the veterans cards that they created from the heart with messages that say it all: Thank you for your service. We love our veterans.

We wish our school community a meaningful Veterans Day. Thank you to our veterans for your service to our country!
Warm Regards,

Beverly Fowler, Head of School

Spanish Students Celebrate Day of the Dead
Winners of the Día de los Muertos skull painting contest, Kate Burton, Kendall Colwell, and Elsie Richter stand before the ofrenda and display their creations. The skulls were judged for creativity and originality.
Spanish Teacher Ms. Hannah Lewis shares:

Día de los Muertos is a bright and joyous holiday celebrated in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. As part of a cultural study of the Spanish language, all classes participated in aspects of the celebration that commemorates and honors family members who passed away. In lower school, students colored Monarch butterflies that migrate to Mexico during Día de los Muertos.  After learning what Día de los Muertos is and how it is celebrated, students made connections to the references and imagery in the movie  Coco. Middle school students made colorful flowers, papel picado (tissue paper banners), painted calaveras (plastic skulls), and carefully decorated a traditional Mexican ofrenda (altar).

Día de los Muertos is a great way for students to be involved in traditions that are different than their own. By comparing Halloween to Día de los Muertos, they are able to appreciate differences and similarities between cultures.  Don't forget to ask your student what they learned during our celebration of Día de los Muertos.
